any review(from you guys) or opinion for the above lens? any chance canon may come out with an upgraded version of this lens? appreciate your opinions...thanks

Excellent general all around "standard focal length" lens. Great range on a 1.3x or full frame body. Not too wide on a 1.6x crop body though (24mm*1.6 = ~36mm fov). Image quality is quite good wide open at almost all focal lengths, but may suffer from mild CA from reflections from strong light sources, this lessens and gradually disappears when you decrease the aperture. The lens reaches peak image quality when stopped down from f4-f5.6. Capable of producing pleasing bokeh in the right situations.

To summarize:

Pros of this lens: excellent build, image quality, weather sealed, f2.8 aperture, fast focusing.

The downside to this lens is its size, weight, and price. (~$2.3k new).

Main uses of this lens are for events, indoor functions e.g weddings, portraits, sports, landscapes (on full frame or 1.3x), some people even use it as a general walkaround street lens, though I find it too heavy for my taste for such purpose. YMMV. Its a great lens though, no doubt.

Coming out with an upgraded version of the lens will happen but no one will know when. When March/September approaches, there will be tons of rumors that a new lens/camera will be out. During march, there were rumors of 40D/5D MK II/1Ds MK III and numerous different lenses however only one of the rumors came true which is the 1D MKIII however most of the guess of the specifications were way off. Only Canon will know.

I have used this lens before and the image quality is very good. If you are using a full frame body, you may want to take note of the slight vignetting experienced. The weight of the lens is something you may wan to take note of. It is rather heavy weighing at almost 1kg that is why i choose the EF 24-105IS instead but sacrifice 1 stop advantage in apperture.

thanks for the very insightful opinion..just a bit concerned that after getting the lens,an upgraded version with IS is launched.. cause this lens' not cheap. by the way, anyone knows when was this lens launched?

If i not wrong, it was launch in 2002 september. :)

Nov '02.

The only issue I had with this lens is that i dun seem to be able to get as sharp as I wasnted it to be, but I would blame it on my weak hands. I also like the fact that the lens extend within the hood. Although I uses the 70-200IS as well, which is heavier, I think I got sharper pic due to IS. So ISon 24-70,if true, might be good news to some, although it might also make the lens heavier...

cs.com selling this lens @ 1980SGD.. too bad Oracle is pausing orders for time being due wedding..

let's just say this lens has never failed me.

although i paid a hefty sum and gave up lots of savings for it, the shots it gets are incomparable la.

besides, if you own a 1D/1Ds series of cameras, the overall balance of the lens and body are so good, that if you train your holding techniques a bit you can actually get to 1/10 without image stabilization (no flame wars please, my limit is 1/13 with this setup and i do know it works well).

hope it works for you as well. :)

I agree with you. Using the 24-70L on the 1-series is nothing but a breeze. The weight balance is just right for me.

However, my hands get tired using it on the 5D. :bsmilie:

5D lighter cause your hands to be more tired? because weight not balance? :dunno:

Because the bulk of the weight is forward, there is a sense of imbalance which puts a strain on the right hand.

once again fellow friends...thanks so much for your kind reply in this thread. i guess i will add this if my company announce a good bonus;p ..well..anyone owning this lens, your comment and opinion is very much appreciated.. or anyone has any rumour or news that canon might be launching the IS version. The wonder of this place is everyone is so willing to share...which is great!! have a blessed weekend ya all and happy shooting!!!

eh.. 5d on right hand and lens barrel on left hand, 2 hand holding should be not so tiring ba..

You won't be holding it with both hands for the entire duration of the shoot, and even if you were, it would still grow tiring after awhile. I've used lighter lenses on a 30D w/ grip and 430EX on top, and my wrists already hurt after 4 hours.

why wait?

an IS version will only make the lens heavier.. I rather they keep the nice balance that I currently have.

I've brought my 1D out on overseas trips with no other lens than the 24-70.. and I've managed to get shots in almost all situations (except the obvious dark, and I didn't bring a flash to save weight). I've held the whole setup in my hand for the longest times possible and I must say it isn't tiring. It really isn't that much about weight, but how the weight is balanced across the camera.

As per what someone has said, I'd experienced more painful camera holding experiences with a 10D, a lighter lens, and a flash mounted. The weight balance is just too way off to make the camera nice to hold.

That said, a 1D with 24-70 and a 550ex mounted still has a pretty nice weight balance. It's really not that much about the absolute weight but the nice balance.

u use both hands to reduce the impact of the weight of equipment rite??

I got you now... it is the anticlockwise moment that straint your wrist since the lens heavy and the body is light...

of course you use both hands to shoot, but you can't be holding the camera in both hands through the whole event/day can you?

i don't know how to explain to you more accurately, but i'm sure as many others have pointed out, many others think it's true as well. perhaps one day when you do get to hold it will you understand what i'm saying.

(and by the way, yes, last time i did not understand too, till i got to the current setup.)

something like that, yes. :)

i just thought of an example,

it's just like you have a really very very heavy plastic bag, and you're holding it by the loops, and you can feel it's damn heavy, and the loops are cutting your hand.

but if you actually are able to use your wrist to grab the middle of the plastic bag (let's say it's like a plastic bag with like a bottle of 1.5L coke or something), and you hold the coke bottle by the middle in the plastic bag - the weight is the same, but you feel like you can hold the bottle for a much longer time than if you hold it by the plastic bag's loops.
