is $1,490 worth it for this camera? salesman told me it's free 1GB card, additional 70-300 mm lens and i can pay 36 months installment free. did not inquire further on other freebies as I was there to check Nikon d50.

Price seems reasonable. I bought mine in December 2005 for SGD1300 it had 1GB CF card, camera bag and tripod. The tripod was of course a piece of crap.

Wolf .... I think can go lower.

I got the same config as you mentioned for $1.45K during Commex (HarveyNorman) a few months back and got addtional 2 more years of warranty, for a total of three years.

Cheers.

Just got a quote from Alan Photo, Funan center for $1100. Harvey Norman $1388. This is a few days ago

that's even cheaper than the d50! quite a bargain...but the support...will Sony honour new buyer warranty?
how about MS ? Are their prices the same?

Yes Sony will honor all warranties as posted by one of the threads I seen elsewhere. :) get Dynax 5D and you won't go wrong. ;)

just asked for an equote from MS Color and was told they don't sell anymore as it is already a discontinued model.

5D is a great DSLR. but why not wait for a while longer for SONY to announce their new DSLRs?

originally planning on panasonic fz7 but have grown impatient of the release date. now considering nikon d50 or minolta 5d. still undecided now of the 3 but wife (aka manager) has already agreed on any.

fz7 can still buy when it comes.
I have an fz5. this one will be good for a grab and go with 12x zoom.
I was at my kids graduation and sitting in the auditorium, all of them looked like ants on the stage, so the 12x will be very handy!
you should have 3 cameras...a compact one for basic grab-and-go, a medium one like the FZ7 for zoom and manual controls and a DSLR.
since the dynax 5D have been discontinued and I don't believe sony's new model prices will be appetising, I wonder if its better to go for the Pentax istDL instead...cheaper and still current model.

ooooh, that is too expensive to have 3 cameras. am considering the 3 options.
1. Panasonic FZ7 + Fuji F30 (to cover low/natural light)
2. Nikon D50
3. Minolta Dynax 5D
4. since you mentioned istDL... istDL + an ultra compact.

hmmmm.... still leaning on either 1 or 3.... did not know this will be a very hard decision.

Personally as a hobbyist, I'd rather u go for Dynax5D.

U'll probably be utilising the following lenses very often which are relatively cheap:
- Kit lens 18-70mm (comes with Dynax5D and will cover up to 75% of ur basic shooting needs)
- Tele lens maybe 70-300? Cost like $300+ to $400 and u will need it for extreme closeups.

Ease of use is relative so I wun comment on it.
But with Anti-shake built on sensor without the need for u to invest heavily in VR or IS lens (if u've got handshake problem or if lazy to carry tripod/monopod for that 1/5sec exposure. Its no replacement for anything below 1/5sec FYI), its prolly ur best bang for buck.
