If you burn the DVD in standard video DVD format it should play in a DVD player. This means you must author the DVD and burn the VOB files in the correct folders. On the other hand, if you just burn a few video files to the DVD, many players will not be able to read the files.

Note that when you burn the DVD. You either burn to DVD-R or DVD+R media. That depends on your burner and the DVD player.
From experience, DVD-R is more commonly acceptable in DVD players than DVD+R.
There is no way to get 100% compatibility playback with either DVD-R or DVD+R. You need to go to a DVD replicator factory to make DVD-ROM. Only DVD-ROM is 100% compatible. But the minimal order is typically 50 pieces.
