I still don't understand why people are comparing the R1 to the F828. The R1 is a totally new camera develop from ground up. Different body, different lens, different image processing and different sensor.

Because 828 used to be the flagship model and now it is the R1. And they are both in a similar price range when first launched. If everything must be the same then they can be compared, how do you ever compare cameras from different brands?

Relax lah bro, :bsmilie: no need to be so serious about words here in this type of "happy hobby" forum. ;) (but po-lee-tic$ is something else - formal apology is needed, but sometime sori not enough if you say the really wrong ting:nono: )

On many online review, R1 is compared to many other brands DSLR such as 350D, D50 etc ... all because they are around the same price range and capabilities (minus the changing of lenses). So comparing R1 to its earlier sibling (or cousin) 828 is beri natural one. Neber mind that he called it an improved version - if that is your main objection, should raise it in your first response.

Anyway, judging by the beri few posts, we are probably the beri few in CS that can be bothered about R1, so we can be Sony-kaki rather than opponents. Good day!:D

See this one Sony R1 against Canon 20D with EF-S 10-22 Lens at PBASE.

Not bad performance for R1 which cost fraction of Canon combo. Seeing this type of comparison always make me feel so good about owning R1 and not dishing out $ to buy 10-22.
Actually should post this one at Canon side if you want more people attention to R1. :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Yah boy, that is why I look at the R1 more like a DSLR. But I am afraid that there will not be a R2 anymore, considering that Sony has taken over KM with its 'new' Alpha mount DSLRs to be released. A R2 with AS and faster DSLR-like response will be the perfect prosumer... the current R1 is rather limited in many ways but its superb lens does make up a lot for its performance deficiencies.

true, i own both a sony R1 and canon 30D with L lens. The sony is indeed slightly more detailed due to its 10.2mp sensor which u can't deny. It does look a bit sharper (according to dpreview, slightly processed but does not have the per pixel sharpness of the canon). What this means is the canon is smoother, natural. Sony if u compare side by side looks ever so slightly enhanced sharper which many may prefer. Color for sony is also slightly enhanced if u use the standard setting, for a more natural comparison, shoot in adobe RGB.
In the long run, i still prefer the canon due to the ability to change lens and it is definitely faster in capturing fashion shoot. Sony is a bit no no for low lighting and fast moving object, there is definitely a lag in capturing fashion models.
But the sony Carl Zeiss lens is worth the whole camera alone, can use it as a spare or backup camera. It is comparable to Canon L lens. The L lens alone can buy the sony R1 with a few hundred to spare some more. My take is to own both, but since sony is coming out with alpha series, sell R1 now while u still can. Keep it and its also a good deal if u can find a used one.

Anyway, 1st version of anything sure to have its teething problems, so expect this for the Sony DSLR too. Personally, I used to shoot EOS film but skip the 10D/300D. Now quite happy with the 350D kit picked up used for less than 1k. I won't rush and buy Sony DSLR especially if have to invest in a lens system as well. A 350D new or old will be more attractive.

I oso not worry about drop in R1 value. Drop value is for sure one lah ... like 300D > 350D. What is important is to enjoy your R1 now as much as possible. With its 10M res and Zeiss lens, I will be pleased for a long while. ;)

Yah, if you want to sell your R1 soon. Let me know. I will be pleased to buy another one just as back up for my June trip. :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Are there any places that still sells the F828 and maybe a price of less than $900 brand new ?

The R1 beats many non-DSLR cameras flat in image quality and responsiveness. The lens is a beaut (love the rare 24mm) and the sensor actually the size of those in many DSLRs! Even at 3200, the images are still useable - but not for large prints of course.

Only grouses, except for the price, is that it stops at 120mm and a pretty slow F4.8. Otherwise it handles very SLR-like. Also, you can shoot totally silent unlike an SLR which must have that slap of the mirror.
