Moisture is one of the main threats against valuable historical assets and other artifacts in museums and archives. The fluctuation of relative humidity levels within the storage areas can have disastrous effects on certain materials, which may result in deformation.

Objects which compose materials of cellulosic nature, for example, wood, paper, linen, cotton etc will have dimensional changes when humidity fluctuates. Insect, bird, fish collections which contains protein substances are also sensitive to humidity. Metal objects can also deteriorate in high humidity. The presence of airborne chloride contaminants, copper and its alloys can develop bronze disease that manifests itself as a green powdery substance on the surface or a waxy film on the artifact. Bronze disease is a type of corrosion which gives antiquities collectors nightmares!

As long as relative humidity is kept within controlled limits, no micro-organism or bacteria activity will occur, no corrosion will form on metallic surfaces. Therefore, from a conservation standpoint, its important to maintain a level of relative humidity at a constant level. Different humidity settings of electronic dry cabinets offer a solution to protect and preserve these items effectively and economically. Once objects are already stabilised at a particular level of relative humidity that is maintained steadily and constantly, they will survive without additional stress.
