I and my friends are freelancing to make a coparate videos for a company based in Malaysia. Would like to ask if we can bring our equipment to Malaysia? Cos my friend say that special permission is needed in order to bring video camera (i.e our is canon XL-2) into Malaysia.

And is there any good production house in Malaysia to recommend for renting video camera?
Hope any kind hearted soul can help me out here. Thanks

Hi,

Actually XL-2 camera should be alright to bring in, ( Drive in or Fly-in ), normally if u drive
in should be ok. At most a RM$30.00 -50.00 kopi money !

If u r worry, Do contact Jacky / VISUAL Three ( KL ) at 0192128899 for rental.
Should he ask who gave u his nos. Just tell him Gilbert of ETG

GoodLuck !

You mean video camera need permission to bring into Malaysia???

Is there a minimum specs before this rule kicks in? What about those family videocams or digital cameras with video capability?

Actually, there isn't any rulings that a permit is required for most country except for some communist country. I'd brought my panasonic and sony HDV cams to Thailand for a documentary and there was no permit required. BTW if anyone wants to film along Thai-Myanma border - the Thai Rangers will stop you unless there's a permit esp. near to the Karens refugee camps area.

For Malaysia, it's not about permit - it's only about the custom declaration of electrical goods (provided you have just bought it - then they tax you kind of thingy) see the back of the whitecard page 6. My partner had shot some MTVs in M'sia before with XL1 & 2, no issues.

Play safe(kiasu) just get a letter from the company that you are filming for then shouldn't be a problem. The most is like what "Gil" mentioned to prepare kopi $ for those officials who purposely stop you to check.

Oh if you are going to pack ur cams and equipment and taking a plane, my advice is to get Pelican Boxes and padlock the cases. Cos the luggage depts at airports will just throw the luggages anyhow.

Actually i brought my camera (DSR370) to China Shanghai before..
huge problems..
Needed to put a deposit of S$20,000!!
Even though i had a letter proving i had to do a shoot for a company..
Luckily my client was willing to put in this deposit..
But delayed my shoot by a couple of days..

They advised us to inform their ministry prior to arrival in future..
Need special permission..

Better to make some checks..

Don't think is a BIG issue for Jeepun ! anyway, I'll be bring 2 Video Camera's and a Sony DS45DVCAM VTR , tripods to Tokyo this Sept .

* what I face problem ( sometime ) is when u r back to SGP, our Custom may ask for Letter
( Temp. Export permits - apply TRADENET ). I don't bother ( unless got a lot of Gears ... )

Cheers,

Hi des1984,

I dont think you need to worry about it. As the video camera is for your own use and not for sale (they wont impose u any import tax). Especially if you are holding a Singapore Passport, they will not think that you bought the video camera from Singapore.

I always bring along my SLR when I travel to Malaysia, no problem at all. BTW if you worry about problem when coming back to singapore (Singapore Custom), bring along ur receipt to show that it is bought in Singapore and you already pay the GST. ;)
