You are better off spending money to get the lens hood which serves to protect the lens and minimize flare :D.

oooo....... i luv lens hood... so masculine :kiss::kiss:

Don't need filter one la..
The front element so deep inside.
But i don't know why mine got a few specs of dust inside. ( about 8)
It does not affect the picture quality but i'm sending it to service next week.
Maybe filter prevent dust?

A filter would make cleaning the front of the lens easier, as dirt/fingerprints would get onto the filter instead of the lens front element coating. But as the front element of the 1.8 is so deep inside, it won't get dirty so easily.

A filter will not prevent dust inside the lens. As the lens elements move (zooming or focusing) it displaces air, and sometimes causes dust to be sucked inside.

Hey thanks for solving my question huggable. :)
Now i'm certain i don't need to put on my $8 Tokina crap filter on my lens. :D

My pleasure. Sometimes cheapo filters would cause flare instead. Dust is inevitable, as long as it doesn't affect the image it's fine.

Unless you got fungus.;( That's a different story.

If the filter cost the same price as the lens, I would put it on a more expensive lens. ;p

And on this lens, once you put the filter on, the tendency to soil it is higher than the tendency to soil the front element on the 50/1.8 because it's so recessed and the diameter is smaller.

Actually when I use a filter I use B+W. Standard filters for all my lenses. I used to shoot without filters but in the conditions I shoot in and the way I treat my stuff I finally gave in to buying-filters-syndrome.

Even my 50mm f/1.8 is equipped with a B+W (Approx 60%) of the lens price.

My only lens now without a filter is my al-cheapo 18-55mm which never seems to spoil, so I think a filter is not needed ;p

not consistent leh
you shud also put your b&w on the 18-55mm; even if the filter cost more than the lens
so that your principle holds

no leh. Other lens got damage but 18-55 seems indestructable. Maybe it's because it is so light. :dunno:

In fact, apart from cost, part of the reason why I don't use a filter on the 18-55 was because the front element rotates, and feels flimsy. I wouldn't want to add weight, or put a lens hood on it even!

I think the 50/1.8 is cheaper leh..

I do not use filter for my 50 f1.8. First, price of the lens is cheap, no need to worry about it being scratched. Filter does introduce more reflection, even with the best filter. Just look into the lens and varies the angle. If you can see the filter, means that it reflects light.

hey guy!!!
i just got my len with a cheap UV filter...
just for protection ...

isn't it nice to have protection ;)

You'll probably regret having the cheap UV filter and chuck it aside when you're shooting. ;p

after reading...
i come out with this idea...
i buy a cheap UV filter to protect my lens(as it cost me only $10)
if the Cheap filter really doesn't work out nice, i just remove it (as many agree that filter is not required)...

Yah.. then you waste $10... I'm sure you won't want to use the filter anywhere else once you know it flares like nobody's business.... ;p In that case you might have been better off with the Pro1D at least it's decent and you can use it on another lens if you think the 50/1.8 doesn't need it.
