I'm hoping someone here has been through this because I'm getting conflicting advice from everyone I ask. I work as a nursing assistant at a facility in Highland, and about three months ago I was helping move a patient when they suddenly panicked and grabbed onto me, throwing me off balance. I twisted my knee and ended up tearing my ACL, which needed surgery. The surgery itself went okay and I've been doing physical therapy at a place my own doctor recommended, and I've been making really good progress according to them. But now the insurance company is saying that if I want them to keep covering my PT, I have to switch to one of their approved providers that's about twenty minutes further away. I'm worried about switching in the middle of my recovery because I finally have a therapist who knows my knee and what I need, and I've heard horror stories about people getting sent to places where they just get rushed through and don't actually improve. On the other hand, I'm already struggling to keep up with my bills on reduced pay and I can't afford to pay for PT out of pocket if they cut me off. I've been trying to figure out what my rights are here and whether I can push back on this, but every time I call the insurance company I get a different answer. Someone at my church mentioned that I should look into my Workers Compensation Benefits in Highland NY because I might have more control over my medical providers than the insurance company is letting on. Has anyone else dealt with this where the insurance company tried to force you to switch doctors or therapists in the middle of treatment? Did you have to switch or were you able to stay with the people you trusted? I just want to get my knee right so I can go back to work without worrying about this dragging on longer than it needs to.
