Stumbled across this pbase gallery on lens self-repair/servicing  .

http://www.pbase.com/pganzel/stuff_im_working_on

Looks like Pete uses Minolta gear. Some very interesting projects like disassembling the "beer can" (70-210mm f4) and 50mm, homemade IR remote receiver, custom eyecup, 7D innards incl. AS in action, and pics of the 3X-1X AF macro zoom. I may consider making the IR remote receiver ... looks like you don't even need to use RC-1000 connector; maybe something like a 3-pin IDC connector will do :dunno: ?

Maybe captnj, sulhan, etc. can put up pics of projects like the 5D vert grip, custom diffusser, etc. .

Excellent link. I love to read about hacks and mods and DIYs.

Ever saw someone selling some IR KM product on ebay. Forget abt the distance but seem quite far. Will update if found again. ;)

Found an old PC audio cable for connecting cd-rom drive and soundcard. The 3-pin end fits into the RC-1000 socket on the 7D.

Here are some pics.

Much cheaper than getting a RC-1000  . Now to find the parts to make up an IR remote ...

Hiee guys...

I have went this route before six years ago and i decided to switch over once i could afford the RC-1000s why?......the dimentioning guides on the connector of the DIY plug is not sitting right on. Only the pins are. So in a glove and speed situtation, i accidentally bent one of the leads in my old dynax 404si. Aftewards then i realised that the pins are really stiff and to bend it back into position is not that easy.

So decided to get the cord that cost about $60 rather than having to send for pin repairs or replacements...for $80 or more...

Its really fun and interesting to do DIY but personally, being a DIY freak myself....i would try to avoid disfiguring of the hardware if possible. Ulse i have to like for the 75-300mm with the focus hold button.....
The zoom actuator arm is broken and had to do a "replacement by my own machined part" so had to poske two holes to screw the replacement part in place....

Thanks for sharing your experience, Sulhan. If I do whip up an IR gadget, it would only be for the fun of it. I would certainly take extra care now when plugging in the DIY plug. You're right about the plug ... it's not a tight fit width-wise and the small amount of travel could cause bent pins of not careful. I may key the DIY plug so it fits into the "bump" of the socket to prevent any accidents.
