For hard disk, I searched google with "hard disk recovery singapore" and found quite a few companies.

but the charges are pretty stiff. asking for my friend who is a complete tech illiterate.

CBL tech. quite good. HD is still warrantied even after they open it up. quite ex though.

What brand of HDD u holding?
What happened or what symptom you observed during power up? No sound or got tick-tac tick tac sound?

1)No sound/no spinning sound > likely PCBA damaged.
2)Tick-tac sound > Dead head/head crash or PCBA damaged.

The most probable failure mode is burnt PCBA(EOS)...Swap PCBA will do liao. See whether u can find any similar HDD model from friends or CS folks here. Swap PCBA and download all ur info, quite high chance to work.
The most headache one is Magnetic head ESD or Head crash onto the Magnetic media. Need specialised tools to swap head or a new head stack assembly. For head crash onto media, most likely some data will be corrupted.
I think basically those data recovery company in Singapore just do such thing, all they need is parts from salvage parts from various HDD company. They swap parts until ur HDD starts to work.

anw, $500 is really ex, as such parts(per parts) usually cost just around USD20.

anw, I'm referring to like for example head damage, one head doesn't cost that much loh, it's because the machine that do the job cost alot!
anw, those data recovery biz in Singapore quite standard, first they'll have diagnostic software/Failure analysis steps to identify aga aga what failure, then change parts, that's it.
anw, keep finger cross, hope that the TS's HDD only PCBA damage, still not so bad.

Hahaha...no no, nothing to worry. Jus asking maybe u same HDD background and work in same company as me, that's why I tot world so small, maybe I know u leh? :bsmilie:

Yeah, just hope probably TS's HDD just some data corruption, that's all. Most I encounter are PCBA burnt badly or ESD damage head....then really headache liao!
