Been real busy with my Industrial Attachment, so haven't had time to process the photos. Finally found the time to share some shots from Dance Uncensored, a combined-halls Dance performance held in NUS University Cultural Centre on 25th March. C&C are welcome. :)

love it.....kinda like fine art photography;)

Technically, it's good.

However, personally, I think the subjects are too small when you try to include everyone inside your frame............ can't see any of their facial expressions and the negative space is a little too much. It's probably better if you zero-in to just 1 or a couple of the dancers and capture some closer shots of their body and facial expressions more prominently in the frame.

like #3. i like the empty space on top and lots of action at below.

Can see from your 4th pic EXIF info that you already zoom max to 300mm (35 equiv.)
Maybe the stage is really too far away for you to get close up shots.
Overall, I think they are still very nice. The background is very clean and no distractions.

Thanx! Point noted :)

Leaving the space was intended as that's how i felt like capturing this dance..instead of going up too close...The music kind of adds to the feeling (ok.. pls dun ask me how i intepreted it.. just a feeling).. ;p

But will explore different ways in future. Thanx for the suggestion.

thanx obewan. Yes was very far from the stage .. 3rd last row i think, at the side ..chose to stand behind as i wanted as frontal a view as possible (tried taking from the side last year liao) ...Going up closer but standing at the side isle will not give a frontal view.. and theres a irritatating "railing" or sorts just at the side of the stage..

mind if i ask what settings u used? the background is very clean & nice and at the same time the subjects are nicely exposed.

i have tried similar shots b4 and there was quite a fair bit of noise

i like #3 mr pro!!

Nice and clean background and reflection too, if can capture alittle more :).

hi..thanx for the comments!:) Clean background as in literally or clean as in free from noise? The background is by itself clean .. The light designer didn't do any fancy lighting for this dance... If you are talking about noise, i guess the pic too small to see any noise.. and since the background is black.. colour noise quite hard to notice also =)

I would like to capture more of the reflections too... but was at the ground floor...so was limited by the height of my location.. and also if you noticed, theres a row of lights right at the edge of the stage... so that kind of blocked some reflection too..

hi redzzz... hmmz if you are interested the exif data is still available in the pics...iso 1600 Manual mode for this set of pics...

anyway although aperture-priority mode is my most often used mode during usual times, I used Manual mode 80% and Shutter priority 20% of the time for this event. The cam's metering for a proper exposure of the subjects might be "tricked" for such a situation whereby the majority of the frame is filled with black and the subject only occupy a small space(depending on the metering mode also). So i used M-mode for more flexibility and control. Oh, and i feel it is ok to slightly underexpose the subject (to prevent the whites from being overblown) and later adjust during post-processing.

hope it helps. :)

Having noise is ok, can always do NR processing. The lighting for this dance is ok too :).

Just that,
If #1 can shoot alittle wider, will be alot nicer,
#3 maybe can crop away the 2 left dancers to fill the frame alittle more.

Do you have more of these? Maybe in your album?

Very nice... Thanks for sharing...
