DA lenses on K1

Erm... Why not just shoot as it is in FF mode and crop later to whatever crop factor you want in post? Does activating crop mode downsize the physical photocell?

It allows for easier framing since there will be a superimposed crop box in the viewfinder.

Felix! Here is the reason why I won’t buy now.

I think I will wait for at least 8-12 Months before I get my hands on the (FF) K1.
By then all the Pre-Production units are out of the warehouse & reach consumer.

I probably should not be sharing this but, will do so for the benefit of the many kind “Pentaxians” who runs tests.

Here are the reasons why:

I use to work as Modification Specialist in a famous Japanese MFG
Any new Technology or product example K1; that is designed will undergo up to 3 Phases of Pre-Production before the product launch.

1st Stage Pre-Production (PP):
Small quantities of these PP units are actual prototypes, which is for display purpose prior to the launch to excite the consumer.

2nd Stage Pre-Production:
Large quantities of these units will be for testing purpose by Engineers & Specialists. This is where all electronic measurements are conducted, Rigorous test of reliability & durability.

*These manufacturing Engineers are not Photographers & they know nothing about photography. Their tests are solely based on Technical Specifications.

3rd Stage Pre-Production:
Much Larger quantities of these units are deliberately released to anxious consumer & also for testing purpose by selected Pro Photographers. Whoever buys the 1st Launch, are buying an actual Pre-production units. This is where actual feedbacks are thrown back at the Manufacturer where the Modification Engineers & Specialists will work on countermeasure to solve the problems faced by consumer. Example: the present Sigma Lens incompatibility issues.

My recommendation is to wait for at least 8-12 months after the product Launch. By then most modifications, countermeasure, software updated & reviews are out. Price may also drop by 20%

Manufacturer may also discretely design a “Ghost Model of the K1) such as a scale down version to strip off features that are not popular or not well received by consumer to reduce the cost & produce a cheaper version.

Ha Ha Ha >> So I will wait...

Alfred,

Sigma is doing a fix for those lenses with issues. Be it firmware or the mount scratching the body, by changing the affected lenses' mounts for free.

I am aware of the fix, but there is no Singapore Sigma agent announcement. I assume that there no such thing as a free repair job in Singapore Sigma. But i can only hope that RICOH engineers can modify the K1 Body & Mount structure to accommodate Sigma Lenses & stay competitive.

AFAIK, it is free.
Give a call.

It is a free repair. I confirmed last Saturday with the distributor.

Oh..yeah...
Comes with WR too :)

yes..based on my informal testing with the non WR version and the new RE 18-50..both should be usable from 24mm onwards which is a surprise given that they are supposed to be a kit lens for APSC

Wow nice to know the DA18-55 can be use from 24mm onwards.

wow usable at 20mm? look interesting.

yeah..at 20mm to about 26mm, you need to pp to remove the vignette..from 26mm onwards, you dun really need to pp away the vignette..but not sure if its due to sample variation, somewhere on the copy that I am testing, the vignette on the left side doesn't seem to clear up so well compared to the right side..

DA15 is known for not being able to cover the ff image but i decide to test it on ff and then crop to see how much i can realistically get from da15 on ff

Both shots are shot from roughly the same position..i guess DA15 could come into a travel bag with me given its small size and on ff, its still wider than on crop mode

Wow , test for the comparison. Look not bad if you crop from FF mode.
