What you just said is "trap focussing".
Anyway, my limited experience with autofocus Nikon slrs (F100) and dslrs (D70S, D700) is that they are a little "slower" (relatively compared to my previous EOS 100 & EOS 40D) in acquiring focus but are better at focus tracking once focus is locked.
I find the using the 51pts 3D (dynamic AF) plus 11-pt AF sufficient in tracking toddlers though :bsmilie:

There is the age old trick of setting the AF locked to a particular point (AEL, AFL button), let the boy run and once he is within that particular AF distance (ie green dot lit), the camera will snap....else it will just be waiting. Forgot how to initiate that, do a google. Some pros do this.
