Got the following qns for D70 gurus out there, I did try to read the manual but am not a manual person... fell asleep halfway :)

- Is there any way to switch off the self timer lamp blinking and post flash when using the IR remote?
- I typically switch off the AF illuminator when shooting even in low light situations. Does this mean I always have to manually focus in this situation? I noticed that its very different using a P&S because I can use AF even in near pitch darkness without using the AF illuminator.
- How do you switch off the flash during night shoots using P/S/A/M modes? the option to switch off the flash doesnt appear unless i choose the scene modes for landscape scenery etc.
- What WB mode do you guys use when using the flash indoors?
- For those using large CF cards e.g. 1gb and above, do you normally preview/delete shots directly from the CF using a reader or do u download into the computer first and then delete? I know using "move" is a NO-NO...

Thanks so much!

:bsmilie:Guess there are many 'not a manual person' out here. So guess u have to read the manual then. Or email Nikon customer support and see what they say :bsmilie:

well, there arent any answers in the manual thats why i am asking...

To answer two of your questions:

- How do you switch off the flash during night shoots using P/S/A/M modes? the option to switch off the flash doesnt appear unless i choose the scene modes for landscape scenery etc.

For these modes, the flash is not engaged unless you press the flash button to pop up the Speedlight. Other modes, you press the flash button and rotate the sub-command dial to turn off the flash

- For those using large CF cards e.g. 1gb and above, do you normally preview/delete shots directly from the CF using a reader or do u download into the computer first and then delete? I know using "move" is a NO-NO...

I do a bit of both. Sometimes when I review shots using the LCD and its a clearly bad shot, i.e. very blurred, I'll delete it immediately. Other times I'll just download everything into my PC and review there. I use MOVE all the time, what's wrong about that? :dunno:

- Is there any way to switch off the self timer lamp blinking and post flash when using the IR remote?

Nope.

- I typically switch off the AF illuminator when shooting even in low light situations. Does this mean I always have to manually focus in this situation? I noticed that its very different using a P&S because I can use AF even in near pitch darkness without using the AF illuminator.

Yes and no.. depending on the object being focused. If there is enough contrast or definition the AF will work fine. P&S cams generally will focus to infinity if no other focus point is available. SLR's and DSLR are different, design for presicion, if it is unable to lock on to a focus it will not fire.. and yes.. if all else fails.. Manual focus.

- How do you switch off the flash during night shoots using P/S/A/M modes? the option to switch off the flash doesnt appear unless i choose the scene modes for landscape scenery etc.
Why? in P, S , A & M.. the flash doesnt pop up.. which means it is not being used.

- What WB mode do you guys use when using the flash indoors?
Depending.. some shoot on A some on flash.. other daylight.. some on Preset.. you willl get a different answer from each person.. general guide is if the lighting is quite constant.. then flash or daylight.

- For those using large CF cards e.g. 1gb and above, do you normally preview/delete shots directly from the CF using a reader or do u download into the computer first and then delete? I know using "move" is a NO-NO...

This again is a subjective question.. deleting the images on the cam can be a chore.. coz you cant really check the sharpness of the images.. I generally delete after I download.

okie I am pretty new to this but maybe I can try answering. Anyone out there please correct me if I'm wrong.

- Is there any way to switch off the self timer lamp blinking and post flash when using the IR remote?
** Blinking light, I don't think u can switch it off. Post flash? Err what's that?

- I typically switch off the AF illuminator when shooting even in low light situations. Does this mean I always have to manually focus in this situation? I noticed that its very different using a P&S because I can use AF even in near pitch darkness without using the AF illuminator.
** Which P&S were u using? Guess this differes from cam to cam. AF was great when using Oly C5050, but Minolta A1 did give me headache trying to AF in very low light. As for D70, I do switch off the AF illum too, but will enable it when the need arises. Else why would Nikon have the AF illum there for? :)

- How do you switch off the flash during night shoots using P/S/A/M modes?
the option to switch off the flash doesnt appear unless i choose the scene modes for landscape scenery etc.
** U mean the built-in flash? Don't know about P mode, but in S/A/M, if you don't pop-up the flash, it is considered 'switched off' already, right?

- What WB mode do you guys use when using the flash indoors?
** I use 'flash' WB mode if flash is fired, else depends on the type of lighting, choose the WB accordingly. Sometimes I shoot in RAW in necessary.

- For those using large CF cards e.g. 1gb and above, do you normally preview/delete shots directly from the CF using a reader or do u download into the computer first and then delete? I know using "move" is a NO-NO...
** I download all pics into xdrive, then delete etc from there.

Hope this helps (at least a little little bit). :)

Cheers

thanks gadrian, gymrat and renegade.. :)

by the way, i dont do a move from CF to HD because my machine will hang sometime in the middle.

Looks like you've already got your answers, but for this last question...

I usually transfer all my images from the card reader doing a copy rather than a move - faster. Usually I leave the images on the CF card, and when I next place the CF card in my camera I do a format, sometimes I do a mass delete in the card reader.

I copy all the images from CF to PC using a card reader. After 1 or 2 rounds of review on PC, I delete all except the last image in the CF.

In this way, the next image will continue with the same numbering sequence, and it is indicative of the shutter usage. Also, because I do not normally rename the files, when I mix the images from more than one shoot together in a folder, images do not get over-written.

You don't need to leave the last image in the CF to keep the file sequence numbering in order - under one of the menus you can turn off resetting the file seqeunce numbering. That way, even if you change to a totally new card, your numbers continue from where it left off.

Also, I think remember reading somewhere that doing a format in camera involves less write operations than deleting lots of individual files (can't remember where I read this).
