Creaking video head

Hi all, posting this on behalf of my school. We have a vinten pro 5 tripod setup. Head is more commonly known as a rebadged Manfrotto 503 non HDV.

When I start and stop my pans, there is a very loud creak. Sometimes even mid-pan there is. Not much (or any) sound on the tilting action though.

What should we do?

tripod been dropped?
been in and out of aircon often?

I'm from photog society, and the tripod is the AVA's and we're different CCAs so I wouldn't know the details except that they don't use it very often, and I don't think it's dropped before. They don't go in and out of aircon very often too.

did you 'exercise' the head before use? if the squeaking is constant, time for maintenance or really good background music/audio to cover the noise.

did you unlock it before you pan.

Yeah the squeaking is kinda constant. One 180* pan can have as many as 4 creaks. Not good for telephoto stuff too as the vibrations while panning is easily seen.

I don't know about "exercising" the head though. Care to explain?

And yes, I definitely unlocked the panning base.

The teacher has been notified already.
