hello all!
i'm a relatively heavy shooter because of the events i cover, and also when i shoot sports (high shutter actuations). Hence i'm considering factoring shutter replacements into my cost of operation, considering that a shutter change might be more economic than changing a body altogether.

i would like to ask if anybody here has had sent their cameras in for shutter replacement. how much did it cost you? the shutter mechanisms i'm concerned with would be the one on the Canon EOS 350D, and 20/30D.

The figure i heard last time was something between less than $100 (from the CS Forums) and $160 (from a call to CSC), so I'd like to get a more accurate ballpark figure.

Thanks alot guys!

last that I know off, For 30D, the shutter is S$30, Labour fee is S$130. My suggestion, since labour is one time payment only, try to service some other part to make the labour charges more worth it and also to "recondition" or overhaul your camera.

Cost of EOS 1D mk II shutter is $170 while EOS 10D is $50.

However, labour cost is around $200, so total cost is around $200++ depending on the model.

The labour cost seem expensive. If the camera is still under warranty and is it
advisable to sign up for the extended warranty to save on the labour cost?

had shutter unit replaced about 3 weeks ago for my 300D, total cost is just under $190, i think the shutter unit was about 60 and 120 service charge and rest is gst...

for info

Thanks alot Xpose, USM and Husaini! Especially Xpose's advice to also overhaul since labour is a one time payment (:
What other components in the camera is worth considering for an overhaul?
Thanks (:

Is there any 3rd party who can repair Canon DSLR in Singapore ? If yes, usually the labor is cheaper.

i doubt it mate. these things are usualyl proprietary (:

Labour is definitely the largest part of the issue. For a 1Ds replacement shutter I forked out close to $350 at the beginning of this year. Labour cost was slightly more than half of the bill, I believe.

I'd be wary about 3rd party shutter replacements, if they actually exist (don't believe they do). Considering you have spent so much on a camera, getting a completely new shutter that should last you a considerable length of time makes it worth the cost. Don't take risks with expensive equipment.

yeah totally agree !

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have a better perspective of my camera's shutter replacement cost. I'll leave it open in case anybody else comes along to chip in their thoughts.
