compact camera option: normal compact or mirrorless instead?

I haven't really tried the gx1, just took one two photos. But I guess the ep3 and gx1 are comparable other than the fact that gx1 has a higher megapix sensor. But I'd suggest you try both out to know which you like more

the keyword "trinity" quite attractive to me...haha...
thanks for your sharing, the 14 / 25 / 45 combo seem nice to me :)

35mm on my D700 is just nice for me,
not sure about 40mm FOV. I have no lens cover this FL.
may be I can give it a try too.thanks for your sharing :)

the 12mm is way too expensive to me...so I think this 12mm is out of my consideration.
I think if I choose to buy a m43 body instead will stick with prime, as I prefer primes,
thanks for your sharing anyway :)

I browsed the spec of G1X,
larger sensor seems interesting,
when will it available?

for better IQ, I think I am more incline to m43 now,
thanks for your sharing :)

hm...I wonder which one is more worth to buy? EP3 or GX1?
hope I didn't raise up any war between panny and olym users...

Dun have to worry abt starting a war, just do a search down the forum you will find this thread

Anyways, my take is both are capable, u should have a feel of both at major retailers, in terms of ergonomics since you want portable and the user interface, AF speed and the IQ from both etc. Pany tend to be better in terms of noise, video, body range (GF, G, GH), lens range (X lens is very portable though it's a kit zoom specs). Oly is better in out-of-cam jpeg, skintones are nicer, IBIS (this is good if you plan to use manual lenses), pany does stabilizer on most of it's lenses except the wider ones. Which is better? depends on your needs. But certainly, the IQ of m43 when used with the better primes are excellent. certainly better than pns, plus you get thinner DOF. You can take a look at the sticky threads on the difference between Olympus and Panasonic images to give you a better idea on what to expect. Have fun choosing:)

From my experience, the GX1 focuses faster and more accurately than the EP-3 ( tends to hunts a lot) under dimly lited conditions but both is super fast under sunny condition.

I traded my EP2 for G3 and using 20mm1.7 and 45mm1.8. Good combi to do casual shooting for streets and family.

The newly annouced Canon G1x could be what you are looking for if you appreciate compact camera with good IQ quality.

Guess you are looking for something compact? Then either GX1 with zoom or EP3 with prime.

i find it is quite weird
when you have a D700
why get another non compact camera

all mirrorless are NOT pocketable
when i go dinner or outing...
i do not want to carry an extra bag to carry the mirrorless camera
no matter how small it is.. it still require a place for me to put when i dont use it

pocketable item..
i can just put into my jeans pocket and get on with my outing instead worrying about the bag that contain the D700 or the mirrorless camera

i wonder why ppl keep on calling all the mirrorless camera = compact
they are NOT compact...
smaller and lighter, yes...
compact NO
pocketable definetely no

That why I still keep and use my old canon S90. It truly a compact camera with gd IQ.
If not will just use camera phone. :)

Me too.. I'm still holding on to my Sony w300... For times when I cannot bring my cam bag around

Seriously agree. The compact camera is meant for the times when bringing a DSLR is impractical. Precisely why S90/95/100 are so popular among enthusiasts.

Compactness may mean differently to people , to some it is the ability to drop the camera into a small bag, or an existing bag. To some, it has to be pocketable. It is relative to ones expectations and experience
