Hi all,

Anyone knows of a good shop to purchase Cokin filters? Need a filter holder as well as a 77mm adaptor and ND4 and ND8 filters.

Thanks!

I am looking for exactly the same items as you. :D

I only know that Cathay has them, not sure what other shops selling Cokin.

Cathay Photos is the local agent for Cokin filter.
you can get Hi-tech from TK,
you can also find filters available at Orient Photo

yups, cathay for cokin.

they stack them up together and it's a little easier find what you want if you have a list of codes. like p121 etc...

Thanks bro daredevil123, catchlights and mogwai. Very informative post. Will go to Cathay sometime during the next week to look for the filters.

Also, may I know if I am using a 77mm diameter lens, should i go for the 82mm filter holder? The 77mm diameter lens is an ultra wide angle 10-22mm so at the widest angle, will the filter holder block out part of the image?

The filter holder sizes selected will also determine the size of the filters you get. And the price differences are quite big. The filter holder is 85mm for the P series. The filter holder is 100mm for the Z-pro series.

For P series, You have to try to know if the filter holder will cause vignetting at 10mm. On a Nikon DX (1.5x crop) with Tokina 11-16, it vignettes slightly at 11mm. But canon being 1.6x crop may avoid this. Try it and see.

If you are going for 100mm, I suggest you go for the much better Hitech GND and ND filters instead. And yes, the filters will still work with the Cokin Z-pro holder. But I really suggest you look at the Lee filter holder (called foundation kit). I feel the design is much better. And the price difference is not much.

Based on his/her description, I think it's an EF-S lens and definitely a 1.6x crop body. :)

Anyway would it help if we were to get a UWA filter holder instead of the normal one?

Have to get the single slot wide angle holder for P series. No choice. If get the 3 filter holder, it will 100% vignette with the 10-22. And when I said it vignettes with the Tokina 11-16 on Nikon DX, I am referring to the single slot wide angle holder.

you are welcome.

Noted. That's a little disappointing. Thought there might be something that's really cheap and good. :D

You get what you pay for.

The only way is to go for 100mm filter holders, and they are all in the $90-120 range excluding the adapter ring. No choice. With a few filters plus a 10-stop filter, you total cost of ownership will be around $500 for a good starting set.

DD, what's the best filter holder to get for a Lee Big Stopper? Their foundation kit seems to be sold out most of the time. I'm thinking of getting a Cokin Z or Hitech holder. Care to share which is cheaper/better? :)

They are about the same pricing.

Big stopper will work best on the Lee foundation Kit because the big stopper comes with foam to prevent light leakage.

I think china copies of the Cokin Z filter holder is available, but from what I have seen, it is quite crappy.

I think there is a also a rumor going around that there is a China version of the Lee foundation kit as well, and that it is very very well made, almost like the real thing, but around 25% cheaper than the real LEE but their adapter ring is really cheap, around 1/3 of the price.

Too bad TK and Cathay are currently out of stock for the Lee foundation kit. I recently got a Big Stopper from a friend but I don't have a 100mm holder. Guess I can't use this baby just yet.

Like I said, there is a rumor that there is a very close copy of the LEE foundation kit made in China. ;)

I hope this rumor's true. I'm definitely getting one if the build quality is not that shabby. :)

Geez I've asked around and it looks like the Hitech and Cokin Z are not too far from the Lee Foundation kit in terms of price. -.-
