Class 10 SD Card on GX1

Class 10 cards meant for video. I use a 16Gb Sandisk Extreme 30MB/s. no issues with it on video. As mentioned the advantage of the 95 is prob read speed. There is certainly a bottle nect at the camera write speed.

Actually my concern is not video. Even the Kingston class 4 has no problem recording video. But I cannot stand the wait to clear the buffer for photos. Even if I do not do burst, if I take 1 pic around 6 secs consequentively, the buffer will be full after around 8-10 shoots. If I then want to switch to video then I has to wait around 50 secs.

Video uses less mb/s than if I shoot raw+jpeg.

Just tested. I shoot a burst of 8 shoots with Jpeg + Raw. From the time I press the shutter, it took 54 secs to clear the entire buffer. Looks like I am going to buy the Sandisk 45mb, 18 secs is so much better.

But I have a request, can someone with sandisk 30mb/s do the above test as well. Really hope to find the best value for money card. I suspect that the 30mb/s will give similar results, i.e. 18 secs.

Would some kind hearted soul help in this? Thanks in advance.

Just an update. Got the Sandisk 30mb/s card. Tested and was surprised that I can burst for 9 shots. For a fairer comparision, I burst for 8 shots and it takes 19.5 sec from time I depress the shutter till the red icon disappear.

Results as expected. Looks like the cam has a bottleneck of 10mb/s.

Once again u have been very helpful. Thanks.

The 16 files is a total of 195mb. This means the class 4 only have a write speed of 3.6mb/s. Assuming that class 10 means a minimum write speed of 10mb/s. The files should take no more than 19.5 secs. Good enough for me as the differences are too small to pay double. As I said, read speed is not important for me.

This time around the files were 193mb. So I am quite sure the gx1 and sandisk combo yield a speed of 10mb/s.

Bottleneck is camera so no point getting sdhc cards faster than a sustained write speed of 10mb/s. Note it is sustained and not up to!!! So for those who want to save some money and don't mind the 30mb/s transfer to pc, it is the most value for money card for the gx1.

If u r using the Kingston class 4, u can make the cam a lot more responsive, from 54 to 19.5 secs. Great reduction!!!!:)

Hey icy2fire,

I also just bought a GX1 yesterday, can you please confirm again that which brand and model of SD card I should get? I am really first time researching this too. Thanks again!
