Comparing Transcend's 30x Vs 45x

30x
READ = 5085KB/s
WRITE = 4882KB/s
Data Transfer = 5110KB/s
Data Access time = 4.9ms

45x
READ = 5986KB/s
WRITE = 5775KB/s
Data Transfer = 6660KB/s
Data Access Time = 6.4ms

The 45x is supposed to be 50% faster than the 30X since it is 15x faster.

According to the results obtained from the Excel file.

Performance gains (in %)
READ = ((5986 - 5085) / 5085 ) * 100% = +17.7%
WRITE = ((5775-4882) / 4882) * 100% = +18.3%
Data Transfer = ((6660-5110) / 5110) * 100% = +30.3 %

Data Access Time = 45x is slower??? at 6.4ms compared to 4.9ms on the 30x (smaller number is faster for time, right?)

The improvement of the 45x over the 30x in terms of writing speeds (which most of us is interested in, since it determines the speed the image is saved into the CF) is only 18.3% faster.

The price of the 45X CF is 220USD (@ 1.74 conversion rate) is S$382 (exculding shipping)

Not sure if S$382 refer to the 1GB 45X Transcend, if it is true, then it is an excellent buy since the 1GB 30X Transcend is about S$400+ locally (maybe the price dropped a bit liao).

But if the price is refering to a 512Mb, then for the price increase it is not worth to pay so much more to gain only 18.3% performance. the price to performance is not worth it.

but to those who can afford to pay and die die need the extra 18.3% boost....then you won't even bother with the specs.

1GB 45X is 220USD maybe +- 5USD

Took a random NEF file to check it's size.

It's abt = 10,040,924 bytes (listed as 9.57Mb)

Conversion to KB (assuming 1024 bytes = 1KB)
10,040,924 / 1024 = 9805.59KB

30X Write speed @ 4882KB/s = 9805.59/4882 = 2.0085 seconds
45X Write speed @ 5775KB/s = 9805.59/5775 = 1.6979 seconds

The time saved per NEF file taken is abt = 2-1.7 = 0.3 seconds.

Not sure if any one will want to "upgrade" their 30X CF to 45X CF to gain a 0.3 second faster write time for a RAW file.

I am sure the difference in time is even smaller if it is JPEG.

Hmm if there is a less than S$50 price difference btw a 30X CF sold on the shelf and a 45X ordered than it may be "attractive"

But I still feel 30X is good enough for most usage.

Ah, I know who to turn to next time we need a 'numbers' man. :D Have you done any comparative calculations with the 1GB Lexar WA 32x CF?
