Canon FTB QL Metering Help!!!

Sorry but im extremely new to this. I have just gotten a Canon FTB QL to begin on film photography. However, as a newbie to the FTB, I have slight difficulties on understanding how the light metering works (speaking of the needle that goes up and down when exposed to light). I do understand that the position of the meter needle varies to the amount of light entering the camera, as well as according to the shutter speed.

The thing is, whenever i try adjusting the aperture of the lens hopefully to achieve the "aperture-priority" mode of the camera, the light meter remains at its fixed position according to the lighted area instead of adjusting its position according to the size of the aperture.

For instance...

With the lens aperture of f/1.8, I pointed my ftb to a fairly-lighted scenery, the light meter shoots up to the middle of the viewfinder to show that there's sufficient amt of light entering the camera. I then adjusted the aperture to f/22, and the funny thing is that the metering needle remains fixed there.

May I know how am i able to gauge the lighting if this happens? Sorry if my question was a long winded one haha hope to get replies! Thanks much! (:

This camera has not auto meter mode. So no aperture priority.

The metering is manual.

You align the aperture needle that has a circle at the end; against a straight meter needle. When the meter needle bisects the circle, you got the correct exposure.

When you change the aperture, the aperture needle that has a circle will move.

When you change the shutter speed of the ASA, the meter needle will move.

You need to check whether you are using a FL lens or a FD lens.
