Canon EOS 600D .mov file conversion problem (FCP, Compressor)

Hi guys,

I recently bought my Canon EOS 600D mainly for filming. Thing is, I'm having an issue with the video clips during conversion to Apple ProRes 422 (recommended by many people to use for editing on Final Cut Pro)

I have managed to install the EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for FCP and I can get my Camera/SDCard to appear during Log & Transfer with the small little "tweak/hack" to the camera .plist file, however, when I attempt to convert it, I just get the "!" error and it does not convert at all.

This not only occurs in FCP. I tried using alternatives such as Compressor, and yet again it does not convert. I also tried Aunsoft Video Converter but somehow it does not convert the VIDEO, but only the AUDIO.

I'm beginning to think it's not a problem with the converters, but with the movie clips produced by my 600D. I can Log & Transfer and use these means with movie clips from my Canon HFS100, however those clips are in a different format.

I intend to film on either 60fps (NTSC) or 50fps (PAL) for my 600D as I do sports videography and wanted to do a lot of slow-motion shots. I have tried using both settings to output my movies and convert them, but they both don't work. I would also like to mention that the .mov files can be viewed perfectly fine on quicktime and FCP when I drag/drop them directly from the SDCard, however I do not wish to work with them as they are compressed and do not provide the proper quality which I recorded

Please advise me ): I'm really desperate!

what is your FCP version number? Which OS version & what's your system specs?
Can you view/play the .mov files with Quicktime itself?

Not sure what your exact problem is, but try downloading MPEG STREAMCLIP - http://www.squared5.com/ (it's a free software popularly used by DSLR users to convert their footage to editable quicktime files for Final Cut Pro), convert the clips from your memory card to quicktime using pro-res 422 on MPEG STREAMCLIP (2nd option, like here - https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_QeZEZDdbcis/TZ8olHZt10I/AAAAAAAAB7Y/CLMxLCFji7Q/mpeg_eg.jpg), import those files into Final Cut Pro. Should work fine.

If your files are on your card, they should be ok.

Hope that helps.

hey thanks for the reply, i've tried using mpegstreamclip however, but the prores 422 codec isn't in there for some reason! could it be that my FCP did not install it properly? I think i'm gonna re-install it again.

I'm using fcp 6.0.6. quicktime, i'm using snow leopard, MAC OS X 10.6.7, 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 Gig's of DDR3 Ram.

I can play the .mov files fine on quicktime, I can even view them in Compressor, MPEG Streamclip and FCP, however I just can't convert them to ProRes 422, could it be a problem where the codec is not on my system for some reason?

That's strange. Sounds like your FCP was not properly installed (perhaps).

If you'd like to try, I've zipped up my FCP Apple Prores presets which you can download here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/5nos8a

Try installing them in this location:

I re-installed my final cut studio and it works brilliantly fine now! except for the fact that my compressor and cinema tools tend to hang sometimes when opening, is that normal? =/

Yeah it's buggy. I get that problem too. Not sure how to fix it. Google...
