Recently just acquired a Canon 85/1.8 RF LTM lens
Just wanna ask all the Canon Gurus here, especially BennyNg, my whole lens will turn when focusing including the aperture ring. Is that common?
Thanks;)

Common on old lenses & my black Canon85f1.8 does as well:)

OOhhh!!! Congrats on such a fine acquisition! This is definitely one of my top five favorite lens. Sharp and contrasty. Fairly light weight and fast. This is the best 85mm Canon LTM lens out of the five options.

I'm no guru, but I'll say that this is definitely one hard lens to track down. Despite the fact that this lens has a product life cycle of about 14 years, it's suspected to have total production of less than 3000 pieces in two (cosmetic) variation.

This lens is of a single helicoid construction, meaning that the aperture ring will rotate with the focusing ring when you turn the focusing ring. For some, it's really irritating. Especially when you are trying to use a fixed shutter speed. I cannot be certain, but I suspect that Canon originally intended for this lens to use a double helicoid design and hence, only provided aperture markings on one side of the aperture ring. All other late type (black) long lenses have aperture markings on both sides of the aperture rings so that it's easy to set the aperture when the focusing ring rotates.

Do share your comments/results from this lens when you have the chance. And if for some strange reason you decided not to keep this lens, drop me a PM!! ;p

Cheers,

Cheers,

Thanks Benny, there are few Canon LTM which I will not give up, 50/0.95, 50/1.2, 50/1.5, 35/1.5, 85/1.8. But in case 1 day i need the bread, the first guy to know will be you ;). Not a minty copy but I have been eyeing for this lens for the last 9 months. Am looking for the 19mm next in the collection.
BTW how many copies of the 85/1.8 you have?:bsmilie:

Good list! For me, in order of preference is

1. 50mm f/1.5
2. 100mm f/3.5
3. 85mm f/1.8
4. 28mm f/3.5
5. 35mm f/2.0

As for the 85mm f/1.8, it's so hard to come by that I have less than 10 copies. :( But still enough to do some test to get a feel of the lenses without basing my opinions on one single copy.

Cheers,

Just tried out some test shots of the 85/1.8, old man said too many scratches on both front and rear elements, no choice to keep it till i find another better copy
Tested on M8.2 without any PP

Great images. These pictures really won't be much better even if the lens is optically perfect. The minor imperfections don't impact the image much. Anyway, Contrast, Color and Sharpness all there for a 'straight out of camera' image. However, you might want to have the infinity alignment looked at.

Cheers,
