Canon 400D at $1100. Need Advise

Hi all,

I have a relative who's traveling in Hong Kong now and I asked her to check out the prices for me. She got back saying that canon 400d body costs $1100. Plus kit lens would be about $1250. I thought that was a very good price but I decided to defer the purchase to seek advise.

Do you guys think it's a good idea? advisable to buy from HK and bring back? will the warranty still work? I'm assuming there are no manufacturing differences between the 400Ds sold in HK and the ones sold in Singapore.

No international warranty for canon cameras. but for the price difference, you can easily pay for repairs in the (unlikely and unlucky) case you need to.

I think you might want to skip the kit lens. an extra $150 for the kit lens seems blardy expensive. $1100 for the body alone is a nice price though.

for this price is quite worth, recall few years ago, i paid much more for my nikon coolpix 5700.
skip the kit lens and go for either tamron 17-50 or Canon 17-40L

I think i'll go with the kit lens as well. I'm new to this, think it's a decent lens to start with. only worried that the hk shops might try to cheat my relative if they know that they are tourists...

I wouldn't get the kit lens if I were you. Save the money. Trawl around the buy and sell section and you can get the kit lens for about $60.

yup, the price is about $1,100...you may want to ask her to get from reputable shops like wing shing/man shing in Mong Kok or Tin Cheung in Tsim Sha Tsui....avoid those tourist shops along Nathan Rd...
