Looking at what the video community has to say on this new lineup ...

Heres the updates for videography

1. No more 12min recording. But its up to only 30mins. (Due to taxation)
2. Lots more ISO which means we can possibly use F2.8 or 4 nicely during very dim evening shoots.
3. FULL FRAME (No need to stick to 5D if you didn't like it)
4. 2 choice of compression.
5. Tremendous reduction of moire and other video artifacts
6. You can monitor and adjust audio levels while recording!
7. HDMI output won't down res during recording! Good for live feeding.

Thats just about what is new for video users.

At $6800, wouldn't it make more sense to buy a proper video camera like the AF102 or FS100?

Depends on whether you are going for run-and-gun or cinematic style right?

For guys into indie film making, the price and feature-set on this 1DX is more than a steal, it's peanuts (not as peanuty as 5D2 of course!).

Sharing my 2 cents on 1DX... No doubt it's new features are splendid and tremendous improvements over 5Dmk2 on video output, I think the 1DX would NE a little bit too heavy to go out on field without a rig. I still prefer to use DSLR for wedding and event photography and a run & gun camcorder for video. For USD6800 which is around S$8500 could get me a proper video gear of Panasonic DVX202 or 2x HMC152 and extra accessories.

But well, there are also some who like HD DSLR movie for it's beautiful bokeh in 5Dmk2 and 7D. If 1DX could have auto focus during movie mode, it would leap on par with run & gun camcorder. However to each preferences, I would like to have these both, for different needs if $$$ permits

I don't think that the auto focus (if there is one in 5DIII) would be anywhere on par with video cameras. That would be eating into canon's own video lineup.

Don't think they will do what Apple do, eat into their own lineup just to win over everyone. (Macbook, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, although the differences are there but its very slight)

That being said, I think 1D X would be for videographers who are used to the DSLR shooting style and format and wish for more quality and more functions in the camera.

Don't think AF102 can match 1D X kind of looks. Of course, this 'looks' is really based on your own preferences. I've seen Top DSLR shooters & Top AF102 (format) shooters and Its obvious to me where i'm standing in my choice but again, i would say, it still has to depend on your usage. I mean, you ain't gona bring a DSLR to a golf event when you need to follow a tiny flying ball obviously.

I'm always grateful for more tools on the market and there is always the right tool(s) for the right job. But unless there is a very compelling reason to use a full-frame HDSLR (space constraint/available light only), the asking price and the limitations (especially the lack of a earphone jack) makes the 1D X a hard sell for videography alone. I actually love shooting video on DLSR when no audio is needed. But in scenes with dialog or interviews, the FS100 and AF102 makes things a lot easier and safer. Rigging a DSLR for audio is a bitch and you end up with a system bulkier (yet more rickety) than the a standalone AF102. Hopefully, the upcoming VG20 (now with audio controls!) will bridge that gap between size and performance.
The subtext here of course is a challenge to Canon. What's their answer to the AF102/FS100? Then again, Canon could be having the last laugh; certainly, there are more buyers for DSLR then there are professional camcorders!

I reckoned AF102/FS100 launch was an answer to the Canon 5D instead and I think the launches didn't sweat Canon at all. Remember a lot of shooter were using 35mm adapters with the Panny DVX, HVX, HPX and Sony EXcam for the DOF effect before 5Dmk 2. Even traditional 35mm adapter company like Redrock, Letus and Shoot35 began making accessories for DSLR shooter as sale for 35mm adapter were badly affected by DSLR.

Canon doesn't care about the AF102/FX100. The 5d is still selling well regardless of Pany/Sony launches. Canon dslr is after all make for photographer first and any extra sales from videographer is just an added bonus Selling off a used Canon dslr is much easier than selling any videocam in clubsnap. Let's not forget that photography market is much much bigger than video. I can imagine photographer will scream if Canon ever put SDI and XLR i/o on their DSLR. For the video guys, let's hope there's a hybrid sort of cam from Canon on the 3rd Nov announcement.
