Campfire Photos

Maybe not what people are looking for when they think "night shots" but it involves simliar issues. The fire itself provides limited light sources and harsh shadows. This was my best effort with just the fire itself as a light source. The colors were very warm and remind me of an old painting but problems with motion blur and harsh shadows.

So I tried an experiment I have wanted to do. Use off camera flash. Other than just goofing around at home, this was the first time attempting off camera flash. I used the little base which came with my Nikon SB600 and put on a difuser. Under the difuser I added some orange gel to try to mimic the color of the fire and placed it on the ground so the light would be coming from the same direction roughly as the fire would. Set flash to "rear curtain sync" to try to get the exposure off the fire and adjust the exposure to try to balance the two. You can see the setup in this shot where I left the flash in the frame. On this shot, I used a minus one full stop for the EV (aperature priority).

I feel the results look very natural but you get to see a bit more.

I also used the filter a little earlier in a shot of some friends there with the sunset behind them- it looks like they are standing by the fire. I first thought this one was a bit orange but adjusting down the orange did not improve the photo. I think the warmth adds to it.
Thank you for looking.
