Buying A70 in Japan

If that is the case, it is a pretty bad policy to adopt.:thumbsd:

So hypothetically speaking, if a Japanese National was to be posted to Singapore for work. And if he was to bring along his Canon 1Ds with him(which he purchased in Japan).

And if it were to break down within the warranty period, he would have to send it back to Japan to get it fixed under warranty OR pay Canon Singapore to get it fixed.

Canon Singapore should not penalise Canon owners for purchasing their equipment from Authorised Canon vendors that are situated overseas. They have the right not to warranty Grey Market/parallel import items but not people who have bought their products from overseas.

W.r.t to Nikon's policy on this (and pls let us not start a Nikon vs Canon war here):

The staff at the Nikon Authorised centre in Shinjuku, Tokyo informed me that the warranty for Nikon equipment(which I purchased over there), would be valid in Singapore too. I just needed to produce my proof of purchase.

And if I'm am not mistaken, I was told the same thing by the staff at Yodobashi with regards to Canon equipment. But senility has set in with age and my memory isn't as good as it used to be. :D

aiya...it's each company policy lor..too bad...I am getting a DSLR, but still in dilemma on which one to get..but definately will buy from the cheaper side (Japan or Singapore)

Just called up Nikon Singapore with regards to warranty for digital cameras. They replied that warranty for digital cameras are only valid in the country of purchase.... if you dun believe can call the following numbers:

DIGITAL PRODUCTS (SOFTWARE AND USAGE)
( Digital SLR, Coolpix Series, Filmscanners )
TEL : +65 6 5593 641

I guess the volume of digital cameras sales are not high enough to warrant for international service ... there are still many film camera users around ... the guys at Shinjuku and Yodobashi probably do not know their stuff and is just trying to push a fast sale ... for Canon products, there should be a red sticker on the warranty card to signify international warranty ... this can be found on film cameras, lenses but not digital cameras ...

So I guess both Nikon & Canon do not provide international service ... minolta & a few others do ...

Nikon too?!!? Dat is bad.;(

But what has volume of digital camera sales got to do with offering International warranty?

Perhaps you are right , mebbe the Nikon staff at Shinjuku mixed up their policies with regards to Digital cameras.:dunno:

But what ever the case might be, it is funny that they should have different policies for different types of cameras (film vs digital).

I mean what's the difference nowadays? Current film cameras have just as much electronics in them(that can go wrong) as their digital cousins.

DSLRs not reliable enough or just plain old protectionism on the part of the companies? Smells to me like the current policy of Mamiya USA whereby only Mamiya products purchased in the US can be repaired by their service centre(a policy that allows them to charge a very high premium for their gear). Which means if your Mamiya camera isn't officially imported... too bad if it needs repair.

If Minolta can offer International warranties on their digital cameras, why not Canon or Nikon?

A simple post by me seems to have brought up a lot of sentiments in you guys :)

Maybe the camera guys (Canon, Nikon blah blah) should take note of this.

yes i know what you mean ... i share the same sentiments ... every time I bring my camera to foreign countries esp on assignments .. i worry about the warranty issue and i really hope there will be international warranty for all brands of digital cameras ...

I ever spoke to the canon ppl. All digital camera bought not from Singapore warrenty will not be valid. Canon will charge you.
Flim camera is international warrenty. I ask why not Film & Digital camera with international warrenty? He said company policy.

Even if it's company policy, there must be a reason behind every action. Just wondering what their reason is. :)
