There you got it from a pro. I'm having problem getting my 75-300mm to produce decent shots in anything other than bright daylight. Been eyeing the Tamron 90mm for a while now and saving to buy one.

My only reservation is, will I need to get much closer to land a shot? With the 75-300mm + extension tube, I typically shoot at around 1m range.

Ssshhh, Bob. Don't elevate me to a "pro". I'm just an amateur who happens to concentrate on a single subject type which is not too common. I started off as a butterfly researcher as a hobby, and photography is just a means of recording what I see. :embrass:

My only advantage is that I know the habitats and behaviour of butterflies better, so I have a slight edge when it comes to shooting them. ;)

Erm... no, I said that you should get a lens which has dedicated macro capabilities. In macro, most of the time, we shoot at between f8 and f16, so most lenses, zoom or prime will have this range of apertures.

In the Nikon system, there is one zoom lens which has macro capabilities - the 70-180mm ED micro. It's the lens that I've used for most of my recent postings here. So personally, I don't have a preference for primes over zooms.

But do check with megaweb and sgt pepper, who use zooms with extension tubes and/or closeup filters. The higher end zooms can also yield good macro results.

Hi Papilio, you were saying that the higher end zooms can also yield good macro results with extension tubes and/or closeup filters. How about 2x or 4x tele-extenders.... do these extender affect the quality of the photos?

Thanks once again!
