Electronic variable ND?? This sounds quite intriguing.

Sony released two new HD cameras in the XDCAM series of cameras today at Broadcast Asia in Singapore. The PXW-X160 and X180 both feature three 1/3″full HD Exmor CMOS sensors. A 25x zoom (26mm-650mm 35mm equivalent) lens and a world first electronic variable ND that is adjustable from 1/4 ND to 1/128ND giving you the ability to control depth of field and brightness while maintaining a constant aperture. The details of this system are complex and we hope to find out more in the coming days.

inspiration from Iron Man? hee hee

Variable ND is not not going to cut DOF by much for 1/3" camcorder
But the codec choice is amazing:
XAVC, MPEG (XDCAM EX) at up to 50mbs 4:2:2
35mbps 4:2:0 recording, AVCHD, and DV.

Not to mention that 25X G lens. Ramping at full open from full wide to full tele, I estimate from my naked eye less than 1 stop of exposure loss.
And Alistair Chapman's footage at Broadcast Asia showed excellent highlight handling from the sensor even though it was shot on Standard Gamma.

If only it can come with Fujinon lens with same 25x and 1/2 3CCD
