Put this in portraits because it's not a wedding, more of an editorial shoot...

Hi Joho,

care to share how you lit those photographs? i'm new to lighting and interested in how people light their photos. :)

Plenty of sacrifice on time and effort with the love for photography. His lighting techniques are highly commendable and pure effort have left many images remain in our hearts. Joho's technique are highly based on his own personal instinct and flair for it.

I am pretty sure he will share his settings with all of us very soon. If you notice carefully, his images are highly effective due to his lighting and exposure are pretty well spot on. What's left is his post process in photoshop.

He is one of the most natural born photographers in Singapore.

no prob...

#1 - if i remember correctly it was ambient lighting (down lights from the room) with an off shoe sb800 somewhere to fill the face. ahha i know it's vague but i moved the sb800 around so many positions trying direct and bouncing so i kinda forgot where it was in this shot. (u can see the two down lights are positioned and both "arms" of the couch).

#2 - ambient light for the background (lights on the wall on the right of the frame) and an sb800 bounced off a corner of the ceiling behind and left of camera.

#3 - one sb800 bounced off a wall inside the room on the right

#4 - ambient down light from ceiling. natural light from window behind model turned blue when i dialed a cooler wb to compensate for the very yellow indoor light.

#5 - natural light from window only.

actually i had access to larger strobes and softboxes and beauty dishes and all but i thot it's easier to move an SB800 around in confined spaces so i opted for that.

if u really wanna lean something from my humble efforts here, this would be it: use available light to your advantage, and a simple flash unit can be used to fill up places that dun have light.... i mean.. that's what "fill" is for.

sometimes i can't be bothered to fill even, i just get the model to face the light (like in #4). if i had to improve this particular image, i would have filled that black spot at her right elbow (and a little on the bottom part of the frame where her gown is a little dark), but trying not to lose the blue glow.

and oh i forgot to add, as godzilla mentioned, post processing is your good fren. :)

thanx to godzilla for the very kind comments. i've had alot of good tips from friends and associates to help me along the way. :) still long way to go. i feel my lighting is still very raw and unrefined.

Nothing beats hands on and be there to witness it. Words can be quite limited at times.....

First pic. Very nice. I like the space. the whole thing has a playful glam feeling.

Second pic. Pose too awkward. Bad lighting - see shadow to the right immediately above the piano.

Third pic. This is the one with the most potential, but yet we are still waiting for th epotential to be delivered. The lighting is just too flat, bordering on boring.

Forth pic. Thi is the worst of the lot. Actually, one of the worst of the TS. Why? This is a bridal portrait, let's not distort the bride, ok? Background, thought already plain, is jsut still to cluttered for the shot. Pose is cliche.

Fifth pic. Another standard shot. Well exposed, but still suffered from the model having bad posture.

To TS, other than the first and the third picture, the rest, well, you have much better shots than these.

Well, as I said before, this image has un-fullfilled potential.

If you like the shadow in the background, you ought to have made it more pronounced. As it currently is, it's so faint looked like an accident.

As a seasoned pro, am sure you can see it. Must be a momentary lapse of concentration, perhaps?

Anyway, love the first picture.

Dear Joho;

I love your 1/3 rule composition photo. It take a great deal to control and pose the model and arrange the sofa...lighting...

It must the works of the master hand.

Super. Simple. A great presentation of the art. 1/3 rule...

regards.

super good photography... just like the master... ambient light king  exactly how a bride will look like on the wedding day... including the lighting and such... keep it up dude...

#1 is very good.. esp the DI and mood. The pose.. i dont quite like it but dunno how to improve it! lol
#2 is good, but again pose a bit unnatural. The back seems like arched too much.
#3 is actually something i like a lot. The mood, pose all worked very well, the light also helps to bring up the details in the gown.

GJ!
