Was so bored during the blackout last night, so shot the moon. [Canon 1D + Sigma50-500, handheld, cropped]

I also tried that just now but the wind at my place was so strong that I couldn't get any good shot

Wah tomshen. Not bad leh handheld.....but a bit grainy. Here is mine but how come you can zoom more than mine :dunno:. Anyway steady hands you got there.

ccplim, I now have a Sigma 50-500 too. So happy.

Comments please.

jbma, yours overexpose liao....not much details to see

anyway, the moon is so bright, u can use low ISO and fast shutter speed...so handheld is not a problem

My setting was: ISO500, Av f5.6, spot metering +1, shot in RAW. Cropped big time :D Grainy is due to the high-level sharpening. Do miss D60's 1.6x crop, and too bad I have sold my Sigma 1.4x TC...

btw, 10D/D60 users should be happy with the low noise from CMOS sensors in long time exposure. CCD-based DSLR really bad in this aspect.

Thanks Wai and tomshen for sharing. I also do spot metering but over leh. Tomorrow must try again. Anyway does this help?

errr....once u overexposed, all the details are lost...no matter how u tweak also cannot help

Here is mine taken sometimes back

The moon was really yellow in colour that night because it is still rising and partially cover by clouds, best time to take astrophoto is when the object is directly above your head, this is when the distance to the earth is closest and lesser air turbulence too

So is it better to be slightly underexpose then overexpose and then tweak it.

erm..why u want to underexpose if you can properly expose it? U should make use of image playback and check the histogram, that's the beauty of digital :D

May be u can bracket your exposure next time and select the one with the most details. Since the moon is always up there, u will have plenty of time to trail and error, try using manual focus too, AF may not work accurately in this case

Noted Wai. I always use manual focus on long zoom as it give me better control in focussing. Bracketting is a good advise. I will surely use it. Thanks.

wai ur pic taken using 50mm? quite unbelivable...probably I will try it again and seems like its a heavily cropped picture as well...

yes, it is 50mm/f1.8, don't believe you can check the EXIF data. The picture was NOT cropped at all, in fact I was so close to the moon that I have to take about 10 shots of different parts of the moon and then stitch them together and then shrink it. I should have used a wide angle lens instead :bsmilie:
