I wish to setup a darkroom to develop my BnW pics. May I know where is the best place to hunt for such stuffs in Singapore? Im new to this DIY developing so would greatly appreciate any help or advises. :)

You can try Ruby.

You can try Ruby.

their stuffs are expensive, they charge me $18 for a roll of 135mm developing plus scanning. :dunno: Other places only $10. Kit, do u mind sharing some insights in this DIY process?

Sorry would love to but I don't know enough and has not done it for ages. Anybody can help?

HI Boey. Im n the midst of cleaning my darkroom after they renovated the block.
maybe you'll want to drop by and help out or just take a look.
see if the stuff we set up in there makes sense to you and what you will want to have too.

hm suppose you knew all about developing & stuff already ?

Wait, you want to just develop or print? If you want to develop it's quite easy.. just get one of em cannisters to load the film into, a dark bag to load in darkness, a thermometer and chemicals to develop with.

You don't need a darkroom for that.

I would like to develop and just scan it. :) Printing will still be done in labs. I dun have much space for many equipments. :) I tried once 10 yrs ago but has totally forgotten how the process is like except the room is dark! :bsmilie:

You just need a black bag, try refreshing memory from this thread:

To get cheaper supplies, someone suggested another shop located somewhere near Middle road, do a search in the forums and you should be able to find it.

yup, just as centurion mentioned, all you need is a dark bag.

If you want the bare essentials for developing (which i do) here's all you need:

1. Dark Bag
2. Developing Tank (with Reels of course)
3. Developer (I use ilford id-11 bought frm Ruby)
4. Fixer (ilford hypam frm Ruby also)
5. Thermometer
6. Scissors
7. Measuring cup

Probably costs less than $100 for all you need to start off, and since i'm not really particular in getting perfectly developed negs, i do away with using stuff like wetting agents and stop bath solutions (i just use water from my tap) to save on chemicals. gets the job done, but the developing quality does suffer abit, so it's up to you how you want to go about doing things..just suggesting a very budget-conscious method (surviving on NSF allowance only heh... =p).

And if you do shoot BnW and develop your own negs most of the time, just remember to leave the leader out of the case when you roll back your film, so much more easier than trying to fumble around with a film picker... when it's time to develop, just cut off the leader, feed the unexposed frames into the reel to prep it, shove all u need into the dark bag, reel in the rest of the film in the bag, snip it, put the reel into the tank, lock it...voila time to cook... if u do it at night, temperature is probably around 27-28, do the necessary compensation for dev. time, developer in, stir and shake, time up, dump dev. out, have a good wash with water, fixer in, 3-5mins.. done. dump fixer, wash thoroughly with water, remove negs from reel, wash abit more, hang to dry, 3-4 hours later you're done, snip it up and can start scanning. that's more or less what i do heh.

method is pretty shabby, but works just fine for me. hope this helps...cheers

any possiblilities that I can pop by anyone house to take a look how the process is being done.

can i join iboey if there's an offer as I also wanna do my own b&w developing. iboey, if possible maybe u wanna go get the items required together?

i dun mind. But would like to have a kind soul to invite us for workshop 101 lesson :bsmilie:

How abt Patryk? Care to teach iboey n me? Perhaps go shop for the kit with us? :)

Guys,

You might want to consider contacting Stanley Lim at the Stanley Lim Color Center.

I took his B&W developing course and I can recommend it. The tuition was S$250, but it includes all the gear you need (which you keep), so the actual tuition is reasonable plus you don't have to run around town sourcing everything. The course was one night a week for four weeks.

I'm sure I could have blundered on my own, especially since I did develop many years ago, but having access to Stanley and his studio, as well as working alongside some fellow photo enthusiasts, made the learning process that much better.

Just something to consider.

tan131 are u interested?

i tried emailing to Stanley from SLCC but the mail keep bouncing back :dunno:

have you guys considered the safra monochrome course?

for around $160 you can get one year safra membership, photo club membership and 12 lessons from shooting to making your own prints in the darkroom.

the price doesn't include equipment, but really, you can get what you need for under $100 at ruby, no need to run all over town. you can also use the tanks, thermometers, changing bag etc at safra. the chemicals are free, and so is the use of the darkroom, which you can use most days of the week.

i think their latest course has just started. first one or two lessons are basic theory, so it may not be too late to join in. can try contacting andy for more info.

Join the course at SAFRA. It is much cheaper, and in addition to teaching development, they also teach you printing. Plus, free usage of their equipment for developing and printing.

Pai, thanks for posting this info. I heard of the Safra club while taking the course at the SLCC. I wanted to follow up to gain access to a darkroom. Your posting will make that easier!
