Bought 18-200VR with my D40.
The next lens I want to buy is Nikon 12-24 if budget allows or Sigma 10-20.

i love my 18-135 d80 kit lens
cheap and versatile
thats becos none of the 3rd party lens can match the performance/cost against nikkor kit lens 18-55/18-70/18-135...

well we are talking about kit lens... not f2.8... there is no 18-55, 18-70, 18-135 for 3rd party that goes at the cost, feature (afs?) and also optically. Not necessarily... I find the Tamron f2.8 lens doesn't fare that badly.. And its comparing cost and quality...

Agree.
...have to agree with u bro..you're the MAN50 mm 1.8
then figure out if you like to take two steps back or forward
then can decide to buy a wide or tele lens later![]()
...hmmmm sounds familiar..haloAs many have said 50/1.8 is a good startup Lens. But my Nikon (switched from Minolta) startup Lens is AFS 18-200VR. If you are new to DSLR then 50/1.8 is your best startup Lens but if you have past experience on photography then 18-200 is better.

Read the 1st post by the TS again.... he was asking about a starting lens, be it a kit lens or a prime or a high end fast lens.
in any case, i did state the lens im talking about... and thats my choice start lens.
beside that he did state kit lenses as one of them..

On a DSLR, a 50mm is a medium tele. You won't be able to 'just take a step back' and hope to accomodate the whole scenery in the frame.
