Bought 18-200VR with my D40.

The next lens I want to buy is Nikon 12-24 if budget allows or Sigma 10-20.

do you experience "zoom creeping"?

thats becos none of the 3rd party lens can match the performance/cost against nikkor kit lens 18-55/18-70/18-135...

i think thats not really true. they may not be as good but as performance to cost wise, i think the 3rd party lenses are great. things like the tamrom 90mm and the tokina wide angles do hold their ground against the nikkors. plus, i feel that alot of the 3rd party lens are great for day to day shooting. i'm having great fun with my sigma 70-300mm. its not the best lens but it certainly does capture the moment when i see it.

in my opinion i'd get the 18-70?
though i don't know that much about image quality, but for the ThreadStarter(TS) if you're a beginner
i'd suggest that you stick to one lens, then go out to shoot often to ultimately find out whether you like wides or telephoto shots...

oh ya one thing to take note before rushing out to buy any lens, is to always check in the forums for the generic pricing in the shops, it'll be even better if u can get a person who's more familiar with nikons ;)

have fun.

Happy Shooting

Not necessarily... I find the Tamron f2.8 lens doesn't fare that badly.. And its comparing cost and quality...

well we are talking about kit lens... not f2.8... there is no 18-55, 18-70, 18-135 for 3rd party that goes at the cost, feature (afs?) and also optically.

this one i agree fully

yeah nikon d80 user here! well i just got a new tamron 2.8 17-50 its sharp and happy with it. got it for $630. just sold my kit lense too looking to get a telephoto abt 70-200/300 lense. camp in clubsnap market place u can get a good deal there.

Heard quite a lot of good reviews on this Tamron lens.where did you buy it?

i'd go for the 18-70 dx and the 50 f1.8

50 mm 1.8

then figure out if you like to take two steps back or forward

then can decide to buy a wide or tele lens later:)
...have to agree with u bro..you're the MAN:)

As many have said 50/1.8 is a good startup Lens. But my Nikon (switched from Minolta) startup Lens is AFS 18-200VR. If you are new to DSLR then 50/1.8 is your best startup Lens but if you have past experience on photography then 18-200 is better.
...hmmmm sounds familiar..halo

Read the 1st post by the TS again.... he was asking about a starting lens, be it a kit lens or a prime or a high end fast lens.

And for just 200 or 300 more, you can have a 3rd party f2.8 lens.. so why not?? ;)

On a DSLR, a 50mm is a medium tele. You won't be able to 'just take a step back' and hope to accomodate the whole scenery in the frame.

Agree. As a starter, using wider angle lens will probably be easier. 35mm in DSLR is equivelent to 50mm in full frame camera. Maybe 28mmf2.8 is a better choice. If want some telephoto effect, crop it in PS. ;p
