Hi, I am thinking about trading my hasselblad in for a rangefinder camera. Any thoughts?
(Hasselblad 503CXi, 80mm f2.8 A12 back).

I'd really like a leica, but the lenses seem extremely expensive and out of my price range.

Please suggest alternatives or pm me if people want to trade with me ;)

Thanks,
-SC

my m4-p....either i top up to your 503cxi or you top up to a summicron 35/f2.

If possible, get a feel of the camera first before plunging.

Old Leica lenses or some of the better Voigtlander lenses are pretty cheap.
The old Leica lenses may not be optically as great as modern lenses but have their own characteristics.

I dont need the sharpest lenses, or the most expensive ones for that matter, I actually like soft lenses (but not too soft) from a long time ago. I've tried a friend's leica m8. it's awesome, but I dislike digital cameras.

The most important thing for me is actually ergonomics. The focusing ring has to be super smooth, and easy to focus. An in focus shot is always better than out right?

Anyway, What lenses would you recommend? if i get an M3, M4 or M6 body.

Lol how to recommend lenses, ur question so open ended

What focal length you like?

oh sorry! i forgot to put it in. I like 35mm or 50mm. either are fine, as i only need 1.

To sum up from what I've heard and experienced,

35mm CV PII ƒ2.5 - Sharp, good centre resolution, moderate-contrast, veiling flares easily (my current 35mm lens)
50mm Jupiter-8 - Bloody cheap, Sonnar design, Russian QC be wary, usually back-focuses on M bodies (mine back-focuses up to 15cm at certain apertures)
50mm CV ƒ1.5 - Sharp, good centre resolution but moderate, not-so-good corners, good-contrast (my first lens, comparable to the Summilux in terms of everything but corner resolution)
50mm CV ƒ1.1 - Ultra-speed, tiring lens to use often, good centre resolution but weak corners (not my kind of thing, but it's there)
50mm Zeiss ƒ2 - Sharp, good resolution across frame, good contrast (never used one, but heard good things about it and planning to get one myself)
50mm Summicron - Sharp, good resolution across frame, good contrast (newer ones), low-contrast (older ones) (ditto above)
35mm CV ƒ1.2 - Ultra-speed, good centre resolution but weak corners, moderate-contrast (plan to get one sometime)

For budget of 2000 dollars i would get used Bessa (approx 500 bucks) and a used Leica 50 cron or 35 cron 6 element (each betw 1300 to 1500) depending condition. You can probaly stretch for a brand new bessa if you cannot find used. This depends how much u buy your lens

If get M3 M4 or M6 you will likely spend 2000 on body alone. Even if u get cheaper you might need to budget for CLA. You will not have enough for lens.

If you bought an old beat up double stroke version of M3 which no need CLA, you might be able to stretch for a CV lens. But note M3 0.91 mag to the VF is not suitable for your intended 35 mm lens. Only go for M3 if you intend to shoot 50mm more than anything else. M3 is best for 50mm

The lens is more impt than body. If you on budget. Get best lens possible then get body.

I think you can get a Bessa R2A + 35mm F1.4 Nokton with $$ to spare to buy film.

If one would like to ask for the best RF combo below $2k, some good "more affordable" lenses and bodies have already been mentioned... a shame to put them to waste. so if you would like to carry on the discussion ... pls start new thread.

If one would like to conduct B&S or Trade, pls go to personal classifieds.

Cheers...
