Haha, i like this version better...I currently have the 11-22mm, 14-54mm and 70-300mm. i think i will just go buy the 50-200. 11-22mm too short, 14-54mm too soft and the 70-300mm to slow.

Thanks all!

Question:

What is the budget? That will determine your "best" len.

Weight is a killer of photo taking. If you cannot hold your setup without exerting too much strength, then it is not your "best" len. You may have the technically "best" len to produce that kind of photo, but you will not be encouraged to produce that kind of photo.

excellent point. i agree

newbie question, i've just been to John 3:16 scouting for a good lens that i plan to use for general portrait shots. i asked about sigma 17-50, but this very nice gentleman said that once sigma is mounted on olympus, i will need some "calibration" for it to work best. being a newbie, i'm not really sure what he meant by calibration. he suggested going for original (that is zuiko) instead of a 3rd party lens like sigma.

i also learned that only sigma makes lens for olympus mounts (sigh i feel so dumb that i didn't know tamron nor tokina doesn't carry lens for olympus) :embrass:

can anyone shed light on this? any oly users with sigma lens that can attest to what the sales guy told me?

i'll do some more research on ZD lens mentioned previously.

thanks in advance :)

my vote on the best 4/3 potrait lens is this lens:-

First of all not every Sigma lens is available in a FourThirds mount. For instance, the 17-50mm you mention is NOT one of the lenses available in a 4/3 mount! Here's a list of ALL of the lenses that are available:
http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/43/lenses.html

As for the calibration issue, Sigma's quality control isn't that good, for ANY mount...search any forum for Canon or Nikon users who use Sigma lenses and you will hear about issues of front or back focus (locking focus in front of or behind the subject rather than ON the subject). Sigma does offer free (warranty) calibration (shame they don't do this before the lens leaves the production line).

i also learned that only sigma makes lens for olympus mounts (sigh i feel so dumb that i didn't know tamron nor tokina doesn't carry lens for olympus) :embrass:

Sigma was the only third party company to join the 4/3 consortium to make lenses for that mount. The others decided not to, so besides Olympus/Zuiko and Panasonic/Leica Sigma is the only other choice.

BTW if you are new to the camera you should check out the following site to learn more about it:

thank you for enlightening me ;) as for the calibration, i've read that it depends on what body you are using. so sigma cannot calibrate the lens without knowing which dslr body it will be mounted to.

thanks for the link :)

if you are on tighter budget, try 14-54mm+40-150mm. they are great too.
