Hi,

I was wondering if the shutter sound of the Bessa R3A is louder or softer compared to the Xpan II since they both have similar electronic shutters?

Does anyone know?

Way louder. I tried this camera out just yesterday. If you hold it against your cheek, which i usually do, and trip the shutter, even at 1/2 sec, you can feel the vibration on your cheek bone. No comaprison really, i use the xpan1 and the shutter is so much quieter. The R3A is like a FM3A on mirror lock up. Then again, i'm spoilt by my leica. Oops...The Contax and konica Hexar RFs are closer to what the xpan is. Btw, all this is assuming that the shutter of the xpan 2 not being louder than that of the 1.

any idea how much the R3a is gg for in sg?

Voigtlander Bessa R-series camera are not so well-made when you are comparing to Konica Hexar, Contax G1/G2, Zeiss Ikon ZI, Leica CL, Minolta CLE class of camera.
Bessa use a much more lower-cost shutter assy as to cut cost. They are using a modified low-end Nikon FM10/FE10's (Cosina made those Nikon cameras also) shutter with extra set of shutter in front.
So you can't compare a Bessa R-series camera with any other cameras as I mentioned above.

From personal experience with the Bessa R2, i would rate it as a very hardy camera. While the materials used might seem cheap, it is very well built. I compared to the G series, i used a G1 at one point, i'd say that i'd feel safer dropping a R2 then a G1 cos the G1 just has so many fine mechanical parts to go out of sync. AF mechanism and all. That said, the R3A is now an electronic shutter so it might be just as delicate to shock. But the R2 will definitely take a few knocks.

Thanks for the info everyone!! ;)

I really like my Xpan 2 but its quite heavy!! Was thinking of a lighter rangefinder for street photography. That's why looking at the Bessas.

Someone said that the Bessa's shutter is an inexpensive compromise (or words to that effect).
Does anyone know whether the shutter in the new Rollei 35 uses a better shutter? I've heard it's quite smooth and not noisy at all.

Tom :dunno:
