Actually the correct technique is not on the camera setup and it is more on understanding the insect behaviour well and apply the correct techniques of shooting. I have used the same technique on 100mm macro lens to take
Hover fly before.
Set you camera to the following:
- manual focus and turn the focusing ring to the min. distance. take note of the focusing distance e.g. 1 feet or 20cm ?
- manual settings allow you to handheld e.g. 1/160sec and f11 to f16
- Adopt a position where to can move your setup to the flower
- move the setup to focus the flower 1st and when the bee hovers near it , try to move the setup refocus the bee.
- use diffuser on ext. flash if possible to prevent hash flash effect
