Battery Check :-)

Check with all the bros here if your batteries behave the same... using a 7D with vertical grip... 3 questions/scenarios..

1) I use 3 EG batteries plus 1 original... I pair up 1 original + 1 EG and my second pair is 2EG batteries. I notice that the pair of 1 original and 1 EG battery dies much faster than having 2 EG batteries... (difference is about 50 shots). That seems too much to attribute to the slightly lower capacity of the original battery...

2) I notice also that the battery charger supplied has some problem ... been like this since new... if u charge one battery to full capacity and then immediately load the 2nd battery for charging... I notice that the charging time for the 2nd battery is significantly shorter (like half the time)... I suspect that the 2nd battery is not completely charged... I have never checked the status of the remaining battery life of each battery on the camera but usually with both batteries in the grip, and when the indicator shows low or red, I will recharge them...

I would expect that both batteries are more or less discharged equally... so a 2nd explanation may be that only one of the batteries is exhausted... which means either a fault in the design of the grip or one of the batteries is faulty... I notice this especially a problem (i.e. significantly shorter charge time for 2nd battery) with the EG + original combo...

3) And I notice that as I use the batteries for an extended period of time (like in my recent trip where I clock well over 2000 shutter counts in 10 days), the battery life seems to get shorter and shorter... when my batteries are fresh (i.e. not used for some time and then charged up), they can last about 200+ shots... but with time, it dwindles to around less than 200 shots... please note that I am counting only the shots I keep... I never keep track of the shots that I shoot and delete... I use the external flash all the time... never touch the built-in unless bo pian and that is really seldom like less than 10 shots in all... Note that I leave the LCD screen all the time and the eye cup causes the screen to be on when I raise the camera to my eye... that may explain the unusually short battery to some of u who are able to clock 300-400 shots per charge or per pair of batteries.

I would appreciate comments especially from those who use EG batteries and charge them very often due to heavy usage...

Thanks!

So far when I use EG batteries they seem to give me similar performance of the original. Voltage wise both batteries are about 8.21-8.24V and discharges slowly to below 7.4V. I had a Digital battery that couldd not hold its charge for some reason even at full charge it was 7.5V. I drained it and it was able to charge up to 8.21V.

I believe it got to do with you leaving the LCD on most of the time, I have simillar experience (battery last not as long) while I was travelling to China/Vietnam, 1 day I will use up to 2 batteries, sometime up to 2 and half batteries. Although same battery will last longer in 5D than 7 D (or get the Sony, the battery claim to last really long!).

Given the charger is warmer after 1st charge, I think the immediate 2nd charge will make the battery reach the temperature limit sooner than charging it while charger is cooler, just my guess.

I am not sure about the discharging rate... currently have about 6 sets of NP-400 batteries... with heavy use on flash and constant LCD use as well as AS on with SSM lens, 1 set last for about 500-600 shoots.. (about 4-5GB CF cards shooting in RAW+Jpeg) that's mine though..

I also found that the batteries when use with VC-7D don't completely discharge, hence if you remove the grip and use it in the camera itself, it still have more or less 100 shots or more.

I believe 7D+VC-7D needs more power than 7D alone.

I am not too worry about the battery life now since I got so many of them.

Sorry, I am not sure if I answer your question... I normally depleted my 6 sets of NP-400 in about 2 weeks from usage.

Hart

Possible that it might be the grip... never seem to be able to attain 400 shots on one pair of batteries... next time I will take note of the counter instead of the shot count on the LCD... but have u experienced the charging issue?

Some reported similar things with the grip...

No recharging issue for mine.... all seems to recharge around the same rate.
