Bad experience at The Camera Workshop

Hello all, like to share bad experience I have at the abovemention shop The Camera Workshop.

Basically I am looking to improve my newbie kit lens and to take nice sharp photo when light is dark. So I walk at Peninsula area as my good friend from China recommend me to walk there. First shop I decide to try is this shop The Camera Workshop at Peninsular Shopping Centre.

I ask one of the staff there who look like a china national like me as I thought he give me big good discount because we from same country. I ask him for this lens AFS 50mm f1.4 lens as I hear from my experienced friend that it is good and cheap and allow me to take photo in city lighting. Because clubsnap is such useful place I manage to check price from price guides and i found out that this lens cost about $780. So I expecting a price around there. But the staff guy there say, the lens is will cost $995. Maybe the price is more but the warranty is better and longer. So I ask him, and he say the lens is coming with 1 year of shop warranty. I very shocked. I ask him why no have Nikonwarranty and why so expensive. He say this lens is actually selling for $1300 outside, so the price of $995 is actually very good price and they nice to give me free 1 year of shop warranty. I think the lens price is very funny and should be lower, so I ask him for some discount and convince him I am serious buyer. So he go ask his boss, this old man with white hairs.

The old man say the same thing, and he also say that there will be no discount. I tell him, but this lens come only with shop warranty and not Nikon warranty, furthermore I check out prices before coming here and I know this lens is actually not that expensive. At this time I think I am smart, never get scammed because I know how to check price :)

But I don't expect the old man to start becoming angry. He insist that his price is very low compared to retail price. He say that outside I cannot find cheaper price for this lens. I tell him but set that come with Nikon warranty cost much less, he say this cannot be true and that I am talking rubbish to get a lower price. I not happy because I dont like when people say I talking rubbish so I start argument with him. A lot of people in shop looking. So after a while I say that I am going to buy the lens somewhere else, good day to them.

I bought my lens from Alan Photo after that. I think they nice friendly people compare to the people at The Camera Workshop. Happy with my new baby :)

Title should be Good Experience at Chop Shop :D

Pays to do homework.

FYI, the old man you spoke to is Nelson. He is not the boss.

Am glad that you got your lens eventually though.

Hi,
How much are you charging for you full day wedding services?

Thanks.

Regards

So if TS' experience is as what he has described, then this shop is no different from the other chop shops that so many of us here has mentioned. I have never deal with them before but I thought they are a decent camera shop. But now...:dunno:

Not surprising. They tried something similar on me some years back.. Fortunately I did my homework too.. Now I usually get my stuff from Cathay Photo, so far so good !

Always do your homework. No shops, no matter how reputable it is, can resist chopping a carrot head.

Maybe, I should use this as my signature to remind everybody.

and they even became "老羞成怒 " when people did not fall for their tricks. This is really sad.

Different photographer, different lens, different price, same story.

My last experience with them was while searching for good pricing for the 50 mm f1.2L USM. Was quoted $2350...

Chinese National Saleperson: "Huh, canon lens? 1.2? There is only 1.4... you sure is canon?"

(Turns to nelson and ask for help)

Nelson: "有-----那个大盒子的lah,这里这里。" (Have... the one in the big box... here, here.)

Me: "Whats the price. I'm a serious buyer."

Nelson: "$2350."

Me: "Grey set new set?"

Nelson: "Of course grey set lah!! New set will be a few hundred dollars more!"

Me: "You're joking me, cathay sells it at $2405 brand new and you say a new set cost a few hundred dollars more?"

Nelson: "Don't want to argue with you, thanks."

Hahaah farnie read.

All boils down to Caveat Emptor.

Always do your homework. No shops, no matter how reputable it is, can resist chopping a carrot head.

Maybe, I should use this as my signature to remind everybody.

No matter how well repute a shop its, some might still try if they can.

Personally also encountered similar situation and nearly got chopped at another so called CS recommended reputable shop at Orchard Road area. LUCKY that time I was cautious enough but still a good learning experience for me not to buy blindly.

 indeed the rule no.1 is to do your homework and find out what is the market price for the particular item you want so as not to be chopped later thinking that you got a good deal after bargaining especially..

I am glad you got your lens eventually and sounds very satisfied with it :)

TCW is well known to sell grey set...which is not a hidden fact...
Only dealt with them once arount 1 month back, maybe i'm one of the lucky one to get a friendly and approacable service. Quoted me $740 for sigma 50mm 1.4, at least $100 lower than a couple of "famous" shop ard the area....:o

Almost got scammed by them into buying a 500D IR trigger when I was looking for a wired cable release for my 50D. Nelson repeatedly insisted that it was a wired set and would work with my camera. Quoted $52 for the trigger, which I found to be a ridiculous price. Opened up to check and realised that what he had said before was untrue. Left the shop and eventually got it from Orient Photo for $14.

Ai ya, everywhere is the same one lea, even in CS buy and sell forum, I seem post of people selling used lens at almost same price as outside shop pricing. Some even more expensive though they put more text into the post for newbies to take the bait. If you can sell for a better deal, why not? This thing about camera equipment is about you need to do your homework before getting the it. Even if it is cheaper, there might be flaw. Always check and check before payment, consumer have the right to do so. If you feel that the equipment got problem, just politely reject it ba.

Just curious, how much did AP charge your then?

. . . AFS 50mm f1.4 lens . . . .and i found out that this lens cost about $780 . . . . the staff guy there say, the lens is will cost $995 . . . He say this lens is actually selling for $1300 outside,

I assume you meant the 1.4G lens. I would be surprised if anyone sells (more so if a grey set) for $1300 when the list price from NS is only $1019. Not unless this is a discontinued or "hard to find" item. The 1.4D is $649 list. The price (not grey set) I got in mid-2009 was $855 and $540, respectively.

Yes, caveat emptor. Even my regular shop would "chop" me if I am not prudent.

i've actually had pretty pleasant service at the aforementioned shop a few times.. i guess it depends on charisma/luck. sorry to hear of your ordeal..

I must say that I don understand why they employ the china looking guy to sit there, I went in to ask the price of a Safrotto bag and his reply was " I don't know" and he didn't even intent to help me check out the price.... he just carry on sitting on his beloved stool..... I had to go to the boss to ask in the end...

Buyer must beware. Even from your own country also will chop you.

I ask one of the staff there who look like a china national like me as I thought he give me big good discount because we from same country.

OMG.. is it true?...Same kind can get better discount.
