In Canon, this is call Angle Finder C, Convenient for low-angle shots.

I see that you link the images from www.minolta.com. The description is there. That's exactly what they are for.

Here's a cut-n-paste:

Magnifier VN
Ideal for close-up, macro, copying, and telephotography, this magnifier enlarges the viewfinder image approximately 2.3 times

Angle Finder VN
Used to look through the finder when the camera is in hard-to-view positions, including chest level or low angles. Can be rotated to view from the top, sides or back for copy photography. Selectable 1X or 2X magnification.


I've not used the Magnifier VN. What I know is that you can flip it up to compose the shot.

I've used the Angle Finder VN. It is harder to use than expected. First, you need to "calibrate" it by focusing the lens (any lens) at infinity and then set the VN's focus correctly. For convenience, I made a mark to indicate where to set focus.

However, it does help when the viewfinder is in an awkward position. But is it worth it? It depends on how much you use it. I don't do macro, copy or use hard-to-view positions, so I don't know why I have this thing.

I can't believe anyone would want it. However, if anyone has a legitimate use for it, he can borrow it from me.

I think it is darn useful for street photography when u want to capture waist high action but don't want to squat in front of the subject to get a decent level shot. I suppose places for these kinds of shots predominate on colourful street markets around S.E.A.
