I wanted to go down to buy the new Canon 300D with the new lens kit at $1899, but was told to wait until early next year where Nikon are releasing the new D70 with F75 body, and the price will be around the Canon 300D price range.

What do you guys advise? Shd i go and get the Canon 300D or wait for D70?

depends more on whether u wanna go nikon or canon.

Thanks. I am more to Nikon, but since using Nikon Coolpix 995, F80, and tried my hands on Canon, i am relatively comfortable with Nikon settings and familiar with the functionality, but with the outcome, i found Canon produces better pictures as in their white balance, colour composition so i am quite in a dilemma.

What's your view? Which is better?

I don't think there's any straightforward answers. If you already have Nikon flash and lenses, and there's no hurry to move to a DSLR, it might be better to wait a while. New models will always be coming at better and better prices.

Just to share my view :

I think comfort level with settings/functionalities is just a matter to getting
use to what you have.

I personal think image quality is more important.

If you like the output of Canon, I would say give it a chance since eventually
you will be comfortable with the settings/functionalities as well.

Hope it helps.

PS : I'm also itchy to upgrade to 300D - but finally manage to calm myself
to wait for the next version - hopefully the FEC will be in by next version.

My advise will be to get the Canon 300D although I am a Nikon user.

Does anyone know for sure when the D70 will be out? Or, will it even be out?

Just buy the 300D and start taking pic instead of keep on waiting.

I may be stating the obvious: Buying SLR/DSLR gears is more about building up a *system*.

If you (1) have existing Nikon gears, (2) believe that your future purchase plus your existing gears will satisfy your need, and (3) you have no intention to switch to the Canon system, it makes sense to go with Nikon. However, as binbeto pointed out, no one knows when D70 will come out. You may have to wait and get really itchy.

On the other hand, from what I can see from the reviews and sample photos, Canon does have an edge over Nikon in imaging processing. I personally don't think the difference is substantial unless you always compare their photos side-by-side. However, the most important thing is, if you're conscious about this, you will be obssessed with comparing their absolute performance and be likely disappointed by your D70 purchase.

I know, my points are not coherent. Just to give you something to think about.

just curious...who told u that the D70 will be out early next year? reliable?

thanks

Thanks for all the comments...

My friend said D70 will be out early next year around Mar period, so that is way after my pending trip to Pakistan this december, which i hope to take some good pictures in digital SLR rather than my F80 and using Coolpix.

I have some gears for Nikon, but i think although F80 is still my preferred choice for photography, i must admit Canon have a slightly better edge in terms of image quality, and that means additional lenses i need to get for canon mount. Nikon DSLRs are simply way out of budget for amateur like me.

I am looking at dpreview and other sites for reviews and can't decide, sigh.... i think one of the main deterrant to getting Canon is that i am not sure if a plastic finish to the camera will actually feel good for the grip and more over, the Canon 300D does lack in many areas that a SLR offers, it is more like an overgrown point and shoot camera. Heard there are many people who love the output of the picture, they lament the lack of features that a SLR actually offers.

Hi, yup, the source for the release of Nikon D70 is out early next year is pretty reliable; from John 3:16, and i know the guys there, and i pretty much trust them on that. They told me to wait and see cos I am already owning some Nikon lenses and flash units. nikon is releasing D2H which is way out of budget, and the next DSLR they are launching is D70 using F75 body.

Yes, the D70 is reputed to be out next year, but no one knows exactly when. The delay of the D2h is a very good example. Just a warning, not complaint :D the D2h can take 2 years more to come out I also don't care

* espn siamz the flying pots and pans

Remember, another man's meat is another man's poison, choose what you like. Since you've been with Nikon, you can wait a while more for the D70, after all being a hobbyist, you have no rush for equipment right? ;)

I am actually hoping to get a DSLR by this dec for my trips to Pakistan/France/Australia that's why it is either i stick to my F80 or upgrade to a DSLR.

BTW, you working for ESPN?

I think your F80 can still go a long way :) is there a need to upgrade?

And you sure you wanna lug a SLR around for holidays? I rather bring a PnS.

Nope. I working for myself :(

Oh, is that true? Clubsnap has a lot of such irrespeonisble people spreading rumours leh. Be careful hor. Anyway, I might be wrong. If Nikon D2H is really not, it will probably be way too expensive for hte average Joe to own it.

Wow, envy you for having so many Photography Trip lined up!

You could get 300D for this trip and sell it away, once Nikon comes out with an alternative or 2nd D100 becomes affordable.

The only setback would be u only have the kit lens to play with.

I wish, wish.... I have such a trip to consider......nevermind, I'll keep dreaming. :D

ya, i like travelling and i do travel a fair bit for my job. I am working for ESPN, so i get to travel to India, HK, Taiwan, Thailand, etc for events and stuffs, so i usually take photos too.

I used to take photos on my F80 when i stayed in UK and i've been to most parts of Europe. Love it there. I guess i am more to the central asia, to do my photojournalist project... hope i don't get too serious about my hobby.
