Cant get a good pic out of it.. only like 0.5cm ... Tim the DM said it was a harlequin shrimp, and when we come back, we found that it was actually ambonian shrimp ... i cant get the macro lens to work very well for me, either too far cannot focus, or too near got lens barrel blocke, so i gave up using it after half a dive .. More practice, sigh... (waisj, when to return your lens??)

Hi Beivied,

It is a Squat Shrimp, Thor Amboinensis I'll double confirm the species name once i get back.

Cheers

this also known as a 'sexy shrimp'.. name comes from the way it moves, butt sways 'sexily' from side to side..

hmmm... when i saw this puny little fella, it was more of "jerking" its butt, rather than swaying side to side... but, "jerking"is suggestive enough to make it sexy, hahaha...

c'mon, just put a few more pieces of leads will do, keke...

oi, you said you will confirm the species name one hor..

and hor, give me some pointers on macro lens leh. or, no macro lens how... taking 0.5cm thing is really difficult, some more almost same colour with surrounding, cannot see it in my lcd display at all, got to agar agar if it is there... i think maybe it accounts partly for why i cannot focus on the shrimp?

oei... xiao jie... thght i sent u this mail long long ago..??

Ambonian shrimp, also known as Squat Anemone shrimp, are small shrimp less than 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) in size. A common species in both the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean, it is named for the island of Ambon in Indonesia. This pair was located close to the base of an anemone, in their characteristic defensive fantail-high posture. In the Philippines they seem to be most commonly associated with Beaded Sea Anemones, Heteractis aurora, though they are also associated with other types of anemones, including tube anemones. The anemone H. aurora is typically seen in an exposed sandy area, and is capable of quickly retracting into the sand if disturbed.

and this is how a harlequin shrimp shld look like...

And both pic are OOF esp for the 2nd one. anyway, it a good record shot. Come on.. show us more!!!!

The natural camouflage is actually very nice. If it showed the shrimp very clearly vs the background, then it would not have been so interesting

nice shot!! ;p too bad its sexy bum stole most of the focus away..

hmm.. r u using any macro lens or using the super macro mode??

Nice shot of the sexy shrimp.

I tried to take some decent pics of a teeny weeny one I saw in Redang but it didn't come out as nice as yours. Well done Jason!

Actually yes in a way it quite nice. But since I did not or rather not into this type of photography, I would rather see a good clear pic of it then a few others that are in that manner. Hope you get what I mean.

waisj .... suddenly ... i feel that we are worlds apart...

so are our photos... :what:

From your shots, look like the focus point is behind your subject.

Not sure what cam you are using, but if you can. Switch to spot metering , max the aperature F8 or more to increase the depth of field. Focus lock on the eye of the subject if possible

If you have problem focusing on the subject itself, focus on the anemone where the subject is standing on , half depress to focus lock and then re-compose
