One thing I do is to start taking photos as I'm moving in slowly. Usually they're not spooked by the sound of the mirror slap. This ensures at least some photo for documentary purpose even if they're not good enough for display.

Yes, that's a good technique. We call it taking "insurance shots". Butterflies don't have ears, so they are not affected by loud noises like birds do. However, some may be affected by "noise" via vibrations in the air. But in most cases, butterflies are spooked off mainly by sudden movements or shadows moving towards them - in which case these are perceived as potential predatory attacks on them.
Thanks Richard.. I'll go and take a look. If need then i will get it. The butterfly lists in butterflycircle got most of the butterfly in singapore so currently still can use that to identify the butts that i took.
