Lens Rentals Opinions are always quite good... for LAB TESTING :)

MTF Charts : Tamron / Canon / Nikon VR - Comments : " And it also tells you that this lens has been designed to be about things other than absolute resolution. It's about having a flat field with very equal sharpness from side-to-side, and fairly equal sharpness throughout the zoom range. "

Here they compare a Tamron and Canon 24-70 to the Nikon VR... Nikons Not clinically the sharpest (by a hair) but certainly the best edge to edge !

White spots inside AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR

The AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR lens has black shielding paint applied to the edge of specific lens surfaces to block unnecessary light reflections. Some tiny air bubbles will be trapped between the painted light-shielding portions of the lens. As a result, white spots may become visible in a very confined area around the edge of the lens element depending on the angle of view and light condition.

Position of black shielding paint

The white spots are located outside of the area through which light passes when images are captured and so have no effect on the quality of the recorded image.

Please continue to use your lens without concern.

Lens rentals OPTICAL TESTS summary (average on 10x lenses tested) :

AT 70MM
At 70mm there is no question the new lens is significantly better than the old version
. At 10 and 20 line pairs it clearly has higher MTF, even in the center of the image. Off center, it's dramatically better at all frequencies.

AT 50MM
At 50mm (hold on to your hats, fanboys), it become pretty clear Nikon has made a design choice with the new lens, and the design choice wasn't 'let's make it look great for the bench testers'. They've given up the absolute best center resolution in exchange for good resolution across the entire image field. So in the center 1/3 of the image, the old lens had better MTF results, but across the remainder of the field the newer lens is far superior. Not just that the resolution is better, but there is very little astigmatism, which the old lens had in spades.

AT 24MM
At 24mm what we see is similar to 50mm, although not quite as dramatic. Center resolution is slightly decreased compared to the old version, lateral resolution is improved, and astigmatism is reduced. Actually, the area of greatest astigmatism is also shifted out towards the edge of the image, wherein the old lens it was about 2/3 of the way from center. The new lens is dramatically better at the very edges of the image.

SUMMARY :

......this lens has been designed to be about things other than absolute resolution. It's about having a flat field with very equal sharpness from side-to-side, and fairly equal sharpness throughout the zoom range......

......The MTF charts suggest that it should have nice bokeh, a very smooth image with good sharpness from side-to-side, and may actually give you images that look a little different than those made with the other 24-70 f/2.8 zooms......

I have the old 24-70 2.8 for past 6 years+, and I have the new VR version for the past month.

After the switch I noticed over the past month significantly higher incidents of missed focus, inaccurate focus, or the lens just kinda froze or dont respond, usually in low light low contrast areas, and I had to aim somewhere else or change a focus point or repress the focus button for it to wake up. Gone are the immediate accurate focusing that I am used to with the older lens. I never had a problem with the old one, in fact the old one can focus in pitch black dark discos via flash infrared rays and get me a sharp image.

May buy another old one if this user experience with this one don't improve.

VR slows things down. Old one just have to focus. That's why I kept my old one and didn't upgrade.

Is Nikon still selling the old one ?

Or gotta get from 2nd hand market ?

Thanks
