Will come back to answer your f/1.4 issue as really have to go shooting now, bye bro!!

Well, bro...I'm back and as for your f/1.4...(abit not too "clear"...as no-lenses mention in this case...) so I'll just assume you're referring to as whether or not, better to gett f/1.4lens or this 40mmf/2.8Micro-Nikkor lens!! Hmmm...based on my experiences, if you're not going to do any:nono:"Close-up" shooting of your subjects, then, you don't really require this purchase......but, if you gonna shoot rather near/close to your subjects, then, it's very well worth to purchase this lens as no doubt at f/2.8 one might think that f/1.8 or even f/1.4 will do the "jobs" even better...then one is incorrect:nono: to think it this way as one should take 'Subject-to-Distance':bigeyes:into consideration, certainly will affect the DOF/bokeh as well as the 'Perspective/:bigeyes:angle-of-view-of-Subjects too, that a 'True-Macro/Micro lenses are Able-to-Do than a normal-lens or even thought it's a prime-lens or not, so now you see......!!!

Hope my little contributions here helps you in your decision making, bro;)

Hmmm...but how I wish it's the 'sweetest' deal and not just "sweeter" deal that I had gotten...:bsmilie:...bro;)

Anyway, I felt very well worth getting one and Thanks Nikon for coming out with such:thumbsup:lens for DX-cams as I can now obtain what I only used to be able while I'm on my job=using my AFS-60mm-especially &/105VR-Micro-Nikkor on FX-cams:cheers:

Oic. Thanks for ur advise.

Had been thinking to try out macro, but macro len is not cheap, and not-easy. So hafta re-evulate carefully. Until a affordable dx macro len come along. But the focal length seems a bit 'not-here-not-there' (tends towards non-living macro) for serious macro-shoot. Thus might end up using it to take portraits shoots?

Hence may give up on the idea and considering a 50mm or 85mm just for general, portrait shoots.

Just. My humbles few cts worthless thoughts.... *blush*

Yes, macro lenses aren't cheap for some good reasons (would not elaborate here...so long story cut short...), but finally 40mmf/2.8micro-nikkor is (to me) considered as an affordable+value for money macro-lens that yielded with very capable IQ imho:thumbsup::heart:

As for your general & portrait shoots, yes, a 50mm &/or 85mm seems more appropriate a lens that you need, unless you do require to "go-near/close-up" shooting of near 1:2 to 1:1 life-size subject/s, then a macro lens will certainly do a better job in this particular area...you see now...!! Do note that if one were to use a 'normal-lens/non-macro-prime-lens' to try doing near/close-up works sure:nono:way as their minimum-focus-distance is limited as compared to a True-macro-lens...got it, bro??;)

Hence, do consider carefully as which deem fit for your 'shooting-applications'...and hope things that I've shared with you helps...yah!!

Okay it seems we have a proper review on this lens by Cary Jordan through here:

http://nikonrumors.com/2011/09/15/nikon-af-s-micro-nikkor-40mm-f2-8g-dx-lens-review-by-cary-jordan.aspx/#more-22546

Pretty good sample shots produced from this lens itself.

"The lens is able to achieve 1:1 magnification, but at a very close working distance. Nikon states the lens has a working distance of about 6 inches (from sensor plane). I found this to be true. This makes 1:1 macro work challenging, as there is not a lot of room to work, or to allow light between the lens and the subject. With the lens hood attached, it’s even more difficult. In the field, I had to remove the lens hood while doing 1:1 macro work, as the hood actually blocks subject lighting."

Seems like not easy to use for macro.

That really depends what you are shooting. Try shooting a diamond ring. It will stay put for u even at 1:1.

Going for street, nite-shoot, small object, landscape. Will this len suit me?
