Advise on prime

TS already has the 50/1.4, so the other lens (replacement for 28-300) is not really the "kids lens" ;)

no "kidding"! well there's no best lens, just shared with my personal experiences.

If you must stay with 2 primes, either option is OK. #1 is good for walkabout and portrait but you comprise on landscape. #2 is also good for walkabout, and will a wider view for landscape but you comprise a little for distance subject. If you could add a 3rd, I would go for 28 50 105.

Thanks for advise on 35 85 . It good enough for walk about portrait?
I don't take landscape at all . Only portrait for my kids .

I am using d700+50f1.4G most of the time on my 2 active toddlers.... never fails at fast shutter.

if you were to ask me for 2nd prime, i would want a wider angle one like 35f1.4 or even 24f1.4 ... will not go for 85 or 105 reason is becos you can crop using software for that focal length.

imo, f1.4 is really useful for kids ...

I did consider but 35 n 50 seem just 1 foot away. That the reason I can't pair up. I mostly on 50 1.4 now due to light weigh

TS mainly wanted the 2 primes for his kids, so super wide would not be applicable at all.

Nod . I just need 2 prime to replace my heavy n seldom use zoom heh

Anyone pair up 50 n 85 instead ?

I usually do for my kids

Maybe I get 85 to try first .
But isn't it just 1 foot away between 50 n 85?

It doesn't work like that.

Anyways, I'm not too sure which is your first priority. Travel or photo of your kids?

I stopped liking the 50mm focal length ever since I switched to FX.

I'd suggest the 135mm DC for portraits but since you mentioned that your kids are active and you're concerned about weight, I'd say both the 105mm and the 135mm DC are not what you're looking for. My 135mmD DC focuses too slow for my ~2years old nephew. The 105mm doesn't work any much faster.

now thats interesting.. i switched to FX for the 50mm focal length. haha. but to each is own. the 85 1.8 is a good lens and i use it in place of the 80-200 2.8. AF is fast and pretty accurate so i think that might be a good place to start as well.. however, do note that if you sell the 28-300, youre widest FL is gonna be 50 which is quite limiting. i d imagine that with the $ from the sale you ll be able to get both the 85 and a wide prime. i d suggest 24/28mm

My personal experience, Before my gal start to learn to walk, my 35mm f1.8 serve me well, I have ample time to compose my shots, zoom, focus.... I can take my time. But encounter some problem, in tight indoor, trying to shoot birthday shots.
However when she start to wallk, and run in later, 35mm is not 'enuff'. End up with a 17-50 f2.8 len, need to zoom unzoom focus and snap, else 1 minute u see her here, the next minute dunno run where. And also on 17mm, no issue shooting tight indoor birthday shoot. Or maybe sorry, my house isnt not that big, small and tight..

Till now so far so good, in anyway, im on dx. Imho, be it dx or fx, doesnt really matter right? More on whether prime len and or standard zooom len?.

Me few 0.0001 cts worth.... 50mm, if your house is super big and can shoot group phootos during kids' birthday.. Or maybe super big enuf can use 85mm for snapping.???....

Got myself 35 n 85 . Well can say 85 for half body shot is reli good . Love it . 35 using it for indoor. currently these 2 are my walk about . Still trying out

Unfortunately the 24mm and 28mm AFD nikkors perform quite poorly at F2.8. and being such short focal length lenses, shooting wide open at F2.8 is pretty crucial for good bokeh..
I'm considering getting a 24mm f1.4G nikkor.

Super expensive! But no choice, the resolution charts for 24mm and 28mm are really disappointing.

You get what you pay for :)

There might be new full frame 24mm primes coming soon, so don't get that 24mm f1.4G yet. http://nikonrumors.com/2011/08/12/the-latest-nikon-patents-2.aspx/

If it's true, I can't wait for the new 24mm f2.8 with aspherical element.

sounds interesting...
A reworked 35/2 might be enticing.
A bit sharper and more contrasty, with rounded aperture blades would be sufficient :)
