advice on compact camera

im helping my friend to choose for her compact camera and im not sure of other good brand other than canon,im doing some research about it but not sure of which is the new or old model , budget wise around 500++ so if someone whose knowledgeable about this kindly suggest about it thanks in advance.

Are you referring to digital or film compacts?

For 500++ dollars, can get you a few used compacts! Unless you are talking about contax T series or the Leica compacts...

If you are talking about digital... then there are plenty of choices in the market today...

I'm also interested in RF(film) esp. with B&W photo and thinking of starting up with a new set with probably 35mm lens. Was thinking if it is possible to get a new set with a budget of around $800? Grey sets are also ok as long as the brand/model is reliable as I will be bring it with me for now overseas assignment which would be quite awhile(at least years) before I could come back. Any recommendation?

Hey 2 Peng, for an incredible compact at $500, you might want to check out the Konic Hexar AF. The lens is sharp, with beautiful tonality when shooting black and white. Many people compare it to the Leica 35mm summicron. It's got a really great silent mode.

I have one for sale in case you are interested. I love the camera very much , but am using the my Leica Rfs more so rarely use it. Let me know if you're interested.
