I am looking to work with videographers for a seres of Sports related events. I wonder what are the things that i need to look out for on the side of videography?

1) What are the minimum software/ hardware a videographer shld have?
2) When the clients set a date and change the date, in the video industry, is there a cancellation charge or is it... bo bian?
3) Client has close to 15-20 sprts events, would videographers be willing to give a discount?
4) What are the normal output that is given to the clients?
5) Is there a special way to take Sports events (volley ball, football, bowling, etc)?

Sorry for the questions. Hope the videoguys can help.

Drop me a PM or call me about what exactly you need for sports video production.
I've just finished supporting the recent Asian Youth Games in post production 2 weeks ago.

From Volleyball, golf, swimming, soccer, cricket, F1 motorsports, etc...you name it, I've probably worked on it.

Usually videographers when contacted will give a list of the gear they use.

2) When the clients set a date and change the date, in the video industry, is there a cancellation charge or is it... bo bian?
Editing takes time so depending how much is paid, other people`s project that pays higher usually have higher priority. Lets say agreed is 2 weeks but client changes to 1 week then additional charges apply.

3) Client has close to 15-20 sprts events, would videographers be willing to give a discount?
Depends..those who have just started out will give higher discounts while those who have longer experience cannot offer much discount.

4) What are the normal output that is given to the clients?
Depends on the customer requirement. usually as WMV since just about any windows user can play or if they want highest quality then usually mp4 or mkv but may have to download additional codecs to play.

5) Is there a special way to take Sports events (volley ball, football, bowling, etc)?
Olympics style usually require about 2-3 cameras minimum at different angles and range and then editing time to cut and paste the footage.

If it's really Olympics style live coverage, then there'll be no time to edit at all.
Everything is live switched for immediate broadcasting. (eg. Live Soccer matches, F1, NDP parade...)

Even the slow-motion replays that you watch in live broadcasts are done realtime to a special edit system meant for fast turnaround. ;)

To have a comprehensive coverage for a sporting event in a non-live broadcast environment, it is definitely good to have 2-3 cameras covering different angles and shot sizes like what Reportage mentioned, but your editing time will escalate....so in some ways, it may be good to opt for live switching with independent camera recording as safety.

Thanks Reportage and DXNmedia,

Its enlightening to know. Thanks for the guidance.

hi Jace,

Agreed that a multi-cam is needed for such and live switching recording to save post production time.

as for the few queries:
1) What are the minimum software/ hardware a videographer shld have?
Depends on what your client want in the final..if your client want broadcast quality, then u need a better camera, if just for achieving in DVD, then a normal grade will do.. and well, it also depends on the budget

2) When the clients set a date and change the date, in the video industry, is there a cancellation charge or is it... bo bian?
I guess u referring to change of shooting date? Some will charge for last min canellation. Suggest u work out a package and agreement for such.. to your client n the video guy too..

3) Client has close to 15-20 sprts events, would videographers be willing to give a discount?
Depends on individual.. as mentioned can package in agreement.

4) What are the normal output that is given to the clients?
Depends on what your client want in final.

5) Is there a special way to take Sports events (volley ball, football, bowling, etc)?
As mentioned.. multi-cam.

Dixon can fit in the job well..

Cheers;)

If you are the planner in charge, i recommend you look for anyone and i mean anyone who has done the job before. next would be to find all the planning material for the previous time the events were held and then see if you can get the same people provided the budget is the same. The rest is pretty much self explanatory.

If you are sourcing for cheaper videographer...at best you will get video operator and worse case is those with the gear but little to no experience.
