During and after charging, the batteries are extremely hot to the touch. Is there a problem with the charger or batts? I'm using Sanyo 2100mah ones.

Read the instructions.

Whenever the batteries are inserted in the charger, always
leave the charger lid open to allow better cooling.

WARM BATTERIES? It is normal for NiMH & NiCD batteries
to become warm while being rapid charged. Temperature may
reach as high as 131 degree F.

for cold charging you have to manually switch to the 5-hour gentle charge.

I see, so rapid charging comes at an expense of shortening the batteries lifespan? :dunno:

i notice that even in the slow charge mode, the batteries can be very hot to touch.

looking at your nick, perhaps your tolerance to heat is lower than the rest of us? :D just a joke...

anyhow, the temp of the batt only escalates dramatically at the end of the charging cycle, so even in gentle charge mode there's bound to be an increase in temp. remember that in singapore the ambient temp is quite a bit higher than in other countries, thus while ppl in other countries can profess that the batt don't get hot, it could very well be because of the weather difference.

Ehhh...I charge with my air-con on and it still feels hot. :dunno:

hi guys,

basically all batteries heat up during charging.

both chargers sold by eastgear.com have the term 'cool' charging. 'cool' is a relative term and with charging currents of 1A, i doubt any charger will be able to charge batteries without heating up.

there is no need to worry if your batteries overheat or are hot to the touch as there is a thermal sensor in the chargers to cut off the charging if the temperature reaches a certain temperature. when the batteries get hot also signals that the batteries are fully charged as the excess energery turns into heat.

i always state that the batteries have a life span of 500-700 times and i admit that fast charging shortens the life of the battery. however since rechargeables are only $3 as compared to $1 for alkalines, we should use and abuse our batteries are they are our slaves and we are the masters.

Is the cut off feature when batts are extremely overheated available in the maha series of chargers?
